In 1954, aged three, Rhonda Collard-Spratt was taken from her Aboriginal family and placed on Carnarvon Native Mission, Western Australia. Growing up in the white world of chores and aprons, religious teachings and cruel beatings, Rhonda drew strength and healing from her mission brothers and sisters, her art, music and poetry, and her unbreakable bond with the Dreaming. Alice's Daughter is the story of Rhonda's search for culture and family as she faces violence, racism, foster families, and her father's death in custody; one of the first deaths investigated as part of the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.…

Minor wear to book corners and edges. Faint blue mark on top foredge. Interior and binding are still very good. In 1957, Ella Simon of Purfleet mission near Taree, New South Wales, applied for and was granted a certificate of exemption. The exemption gave her legal freedoms denied to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders people at the time: she could travel freely, open a bank account, and live and work where she wanted. In the eyes of the law, she became a non-Aboriginal, but in return she could not associate with other Aboriginal people, even her own family or community. These personal and often painful histories, uncovered in archives, family stories, and lived experiences, reveal new perspectives on exemption. Black, White and Exempt describes the resourcefulness of those who sought exemption to obtain freedom from hardship and oppressive regulation of their lives as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. It celebrates their resilience and how they used their exempt status to increase opportunities for their families and advance Aboriginal rights, including the abolition of the exemption system. …

Soft cover. Condición: Good. 1st Edition. Good condition. Wear to book corners and edges. Marks on right foredge. Interior and binding are still very good. In 1964, a group of twenty Aboriginal women and children in the Western Desert made their first contact with European Australians - patrol officers from the Woomera Rocket Range, clearing an area into which rockets were to be fired. They had been pursued by the patrol officers for several weeks, running from this frightening new force in the desert. Yuwali, 17 at the time, remembers every detail of the drama - first seeing these 'devils' and their 'rocks that moved', escaping the strange intruders. Her sharp recollections are complemented in a three-part diary of the 'chase' by the colourful official reports of the patrol. These reflect a similar drama - arguments within Government about the treatment of desert inhabitants and public scepticism about the Government's intent. Yuwali's story also resonates in today's debate about the future of many Indigenous desert communities. Cleared Out combines three oral histories, detailed archival research, a wealth of photographs, and rare film footage from the patrol. One extraordinary episode reveals the multiple perspectives on the moment of contact. Line-drawn maps and black-and-white illustrations complement the text.…
