Bookplate with photo, to ffep. belonging to Jno. C. Sjodin with his… facsimile signature. Sjodin was a Socialist politician from Galesburg, Illinois. He is named as the local party secretary in the May 3, 1902 edition of the Chicago Socialist. (p. 4) He ran for mayor of Galesburg in 1917, but was defeated as reported in the Galesburg Evening Mail of April 16, 1917, losing to Dr. William O. Bradley of the People's Party by over one thousand votes.** As described in the transmittal letter by Commissioner Wright, the report includes : a reporting of the effects of mechanization on the costs of production, in terms of labor, time and money; a comparative chart on the price of labor around the world; the economic costs of the liquor trade such as the problems in relation to certain industries through its abuse, revenue derived from the liquor trade; the growth of municipal ownership of utilities such as gas, electric and water plants; an "inquiry into the social, moral and economic condition of the Italians in Chicago," and finally a report on the "economic progress of the negroes in this country." (p. 4) Economic and social questions such as the former are addressed, together with "condensations of foreign and domestic official statistics, current labor laws, and the decisions of courts concerning laws relating to labor."
