Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. New framework for the aesthetic representation of the sea.We are no strangers today to visual representations of human suffering at sea: the refugee crisis that continues to play out in the seascape between Europe and Africa (and not only there) yields an ever-growing archive of humanitarian tragedy. As both a visual backdrop and a lethal medium of unequal mobility, maritime space and landscape play a significant role in mediating the ethical demands of this crisis. Yet, there has been little exploration of the longer history of morality's role in our understanding of aesthetic representations of the sea. The diverse contributions in Moral Seascapes explore the various symbolic forms through which these shifting moral norms and values have been manifested, contributing to debates concerning the place of the sea in visual and literary cultures and the history of morality and emotion, as well as the emergence of modern subjectivity.Drawing on a range of interdisciplinary perspectives such as visual culture, experimental art history, literary studies, history and philosophy, Moral Seascapes develops distinctive new insights into the relationship between the moral cultures of modernity and the image of the sea.

Limited external wear, rubbed-through lower edge of the tip of corner of the front board. Interior in great shape, clean and bright throughout with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Issued without a dust jacket. -- An academic work that explores the intricate relationship between literature and the history of navigation. The book delves into how maritime adventures, navigation technologies, and the unpredictability of the sea have been reflected in literary texts over centuries. Wolf examines the ways in which literary works have shaped and responded to developments in navigation, presenting sea voyages as a metaphor for human fortune and misfortune. This study focuses on how maritime experiences are interwoven with cultural and social reflections, creating a paradigm that links the uncertainty of the sea with the unpredictability of human existence. The text also discusses various navigation instruments, the challenges of seafaring, and how these elements are portrayed in classical and modern literature. It is an insightful exploration for those interested in the interplay between the sea and cultural imagination.

Annual volume, this time featuring special sections on Brecht's dramatic fragments and on comedy in post-Brechtian theater, along with a variety of other contributions.Published for the International Brecht Society, the Brecht Yearbook is the central scholarly forum for discussion of Brecht's life and work and of topics of particular interest to him, especially the politics of literatureand of theater in a global context. A special section, "Brecht's Dramatic Fragments," includes essays on the unresolved tension between individual and collectivist resistance in Fatzer, the fragmentary aesthetic of Fleischhacker, and the first English translation and performance of the David fragments. The next section, "Pure Joke: The Comedy of Theater since Brecht," features articles on the poetics of interruption in the epilogue to The Good Person of Szechwan, Heiner Müller's Hamletmachine as theater of affirmation, a reassessment of the harlequin and the chorus in post-Brechtian performance, and the performative gestures of quotation in contemporary reality-satire. The volume also includes essays on capitalist guilt and debt in The Debts of Mister Julius Caesar, Heiner Müller's "Keuneresque" interview strategies, the 1962 world premiere of The Threepenny Opera in Yiddish, and Brecht's reception of Mao Tse-tung in two of his poems.
