Original black pebbled leather with scuffing at spine ends and board corners, short tears at ends of front and rear joints, gilt stamping to spine and boards remains bright, boards decorated with gilt stamped inner dentelle edges. All edges gilt. Strong soiling to dark brown endpapers; moisture stains mostly affecting margins of book's unpaged b/w plates; light to occasionally moderate foxing throughout; rear leaves creased at bottom corners. Binding stressed at several points with slightly pulled leaves or quires but otherwise firm. A good+ copy. With author's facsimile inscription at bottom margin of b/w frontispiece portrait plate which retains a foxed tissue guard sheet. Additional text added from earlier editions (the 1893 first edition was only 625 pages). Features a compilation of poems, letters, and other writings by William David Upshaw who later founded the Atlanta, Georgia pro-Prohibition weekly magazine "The Golden Age" in 1906 and was elected as a Democrat for four terms to the United States House of Representatives serving from March 4, 1919 to March 3, 1927. With author's facsimile inscription at fore-edge margin of frontispiece portrait and two pages of publisher advertisements at rear.
