Willie Morrow's San Diego Black Business DirectoryRare San Diego Black business directory published by Willie L. Morrow, a pioneering San Diego African American entrepreneur. The directory lists African American-owned or affiliated businesses in San Diego. The business listing is arranged alphabetically by business type beginning with attorneys, and includes auto shops, bars, Black History Books, barber shops, beauty salons, cafes, card rooms, clubs, doctors, record shops, and the like. Many of the businesses were located on National and Imperial Avenues, as well as Market Street. The final entry, under "Civic Leaders" lists George Walker Smith (Board of Education) and Leon Williams (San Diego City Council) - two important San Diego Black political leaders. In 1963 Smith became the first Black elected to office in San Diego County and would go on to serve on the San Diego Unified Board of Education for 16 years, including president four times. Leon Williams was the first Black person to serve on the San Diego City Council (1969-1982). He would also serve on the San Diego County Board of Supervisors for three terms from 1982 to 1994, chairing the board in 1985 and 1990. Willie L. Morrow - Hair Care EntrepreneurPublished by San Diego entrepreneur and inventor Willie Lee Morrow (1939-2022), this Black Business in San Diego directory reflects the results of a deliberate, community-building strategy culminating from the decades when many African Americans from the South made San Diego home through military service and defense-related jobs. Arriving in 1959 as an 18-year-old from Alabama, Morrow would eventually build a business base alongside his barbershop, signaling an early commitment to print, promotion, and Black-owned commerce. In the years that followed, Morrow became internationally known for Black hair-care innovation, founding the California Curl Company, a multi-business organization focused on publishing, media, and hair styling that also served the San Diego minority community via textbooks, newspapers, and radio. He built a laboratory for the formation and creation of black hair care products like the California Curl and the Afro Pic, patented products (including the Afro pick and related comb designs) and trained military barbers through Department of Defense programs. Just as importantly, he leveraged media and publishing, including ownership of XHRM 92.5 FM and the San Diego Monitor, to strengthen networks of Black enterprise and employment, making a directory like this both a practical guide and a statement of economic self-determination.RarityVery rare in the market. Only a single example in OCLC, that at the California State Library. Book.
