"Although there is no mention of him in Greensboro history, an interesting foreign-born painter lived there for approximately 10 years, teaching and traveling the western section of our state. In North Carolina, he survived the critical civil war years and a personal disaster - his collection of paintings and art objects were completely destroyed by fire in 1863. Two years later he moved from North Carolina to New York and finally to Staten Island where he died in 1905. . We are primarily interested in his North Carolina period with respect to this exhibition, and in rediscovering material to add to the wealth of North Carolina art history. Critical opinion seems to substantiate that these early years in our state were greatly influential on his stylistic development. The influences of Frerichs, his works, and the effect of his life here on his later endeavors are only gradually coming to light." - Benjamin F. Williams.
