Añadir al carritoFirst edition, second impression, uncommon in the jacket. This work presents a profusely illustrated survey of Iraq's landscapes, peoples, and antiquities, with numerous views from the air. The authors are air commodore Ernest Leslie "Bill" Howard-Williams (1895-1969) and Sidney Agatha Anette Hay (1906-1999), the daughter of Major-General Charles John Bruce Hay, who served in Mesopotamia during the First World War. Their work emphasizes Iraq's strategic importance following the recent completion of the Iraq Petroleum Company's pipeline from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean and the RAF's role in defending it. The appendix makes the case for unfettered international flight, and the maps show the Imperial Airways Route, landing grounds, airports, and the IPC pipeline route and pumping stations, with both ancient and modern boundaries marked. Octavo. With frontispiece and 61 half-tone plates, 2 maps on one folding sheet. Original red cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front cover illustrated in gilt. With illustrated dust jacket. "W. H. Clancey", signature on front flap; "Modern" crossed out on front panel of jacket and replaced with "1936"; pencilled note on p. 36. Binding a touch rubbed and cocked, gilt oxidized, sporadic faint foxing; jacket flaps without price as issued, a little creased and chipped along extremities, spine toned, neat repairs to verso, minor remnants of old tape to spine ends and flaps (slight offsetting to pastedowns): a very good copy in like jacket.…

Añadir al carritoFirst edition, presentation copy from Howard-Williams, inscribed on the title page to his future sister-in-law, Phyllis Audrey Bamber: "To Phyl with my love, Bill 10/v". Copies both signed and with the jacket are particularly elusive. Air Over Eden is an attractively illustrated history of Iraq "traced in a most colourful and interesting manner" (Geographical Journal), the plates sometimes employing an almost surrealist approach to photomontage. In chapter 24 the authors make a point of stressing Iraq's strategic importance following the opening of Anglo-Iranian's pipeline from Kirkuk to the Mediterranean in 1935, and the RAF's role in its protection, using established air routes and landing strips. The appendix makes a plea for a reduction in the red-tape hindering international flight; the folding map shows Imperial Airways routes, landing grounds, airports, and pipeline and pumping stations. Air Commodore "Bill" Howard-Williams (1895-1969) joined the RFC during the First World War and in 1917 won the MC while serving with 9 Squadron on the Western Front. After studying photography and engineering with the RAF he was appointed Inspector-general of the Royal Iraq Air Force in 1934. Sidney Hay (1906-1999), daughter of Major-General Charles John Bruce Hay, chef military advisor and liaison to the Iraqi army, co-wrote with Howard-Williams a Persian travelogue, By Order of the Shah (1937), and Historic Lucknow (1939). The Geographical Journal, Vol. 90, No. 4 (Oct. 1937). Octavo. Half-tone portrait frontispiece of Howard-Williams and 61 illustrations, tipped to the rear pastedown a folding map of Iraq with inset map of the Near East; publisher's 16-page catalogue at end, preceded by 2 pp. of reviews for H-W's Something New out of Africa. Original black cloth, gilt-lettered spine, gilt spread eagle device to front cover. With dust jacket, the coloured stripes of which echo those of the Royal Iraq Air Force. Binding with a few light dents to edges, worming at head of front joint (gauze showing through); unclipped jacket with nicks and chips, spine panel toned, with loss at foot and repaired on verso; just about a very good copy in a good jacket.…
