Illinois' youngest-ever governor (1953-61), elected at age 39. TLS, 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Chicago, IL, 2 March 1987. Addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Ralph G. Newman. Near fine. On Chicago Bank of Commerce letterhead, the former governor thanks his friends "ever so much for the fascinating 'U.S. Grant Album'; once started on reading it, I ke…pt right on to the very end" -- a gift, for March 2 was Stratton's birthday and notes, "Shirley and I were delighted that you could join other close friends in the birthday celebration." Signed simply "Bill" in black ink. Original envelope present. Comes with an 8½" X 11" black-and-white glossy photograph of Stratton's official gubernatorial oil portrait that hangs in the Illinois State Capitol. Ralph G. Newman (1911-98) founded Chicago's famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop.
