[From front jacket flap] The American alligator, a huge reptile that can grow to a length of ten or more feet, is probably the ugliest creature in the United States. When he opens his mouth to reveal seventy or eighty sharp teeth, he looks like a dentist's nightmare. He seems to be grinning with vicious delight over some secret horror. His slanting, bulging eyes are malevolent, his disposition is often bad, and his voice has been compared to the sound of a runaway freight train racing downhill through a dark tunnel. And yet this frightening reptile is one of the most useful animals in the American wilds, contributing vitally to the survival of such wading birds as egrets, ibises, and herons, and such mammals as raccoons, otters, rabbits and deer. The American alligator has only one close relative, the alligator of China. How did it happen that these two cousins exist only in such widely separated environments? That's just one of many mysteries surrounding this ancient form of life. The dominant creature in the "sea of grass," the Florida Everglades, the alligator is the subject of numerous legends, stories, and superstitions, not to mention much misinformation. He has fascinated all men who have come into contact with him and has been hated and feared and killed by all too many. Today he has only two enemies, but they are powerful ones: man the hunter and man the drainer of wetlands for "development." In this absorbing account of a threatened animal, the Hartleys discuss the alligator's nature, the reactions of his human neighbors in Florida and Louisiana, his life cycle, the stories that are told of him, the men who have dealt with him and their attitudes, and his chances for the future.
