This is a testament to the men who promoted a particular vision of Australian art in the mid 20th century. Prime Minister Robert Menzies provides a preface in which he cannot imagine that Ashton's work 'will ever become dated or that its superb integrity will ever be out-moded by either the spurious or the merely fashionable'. William Dargie the multi-award winning artist sees Ashton's work as 'poetic' in the sense that it is 'simple sensuous passionate' and claims that he is 'quite free of rodomontade'.
