"The ship was now drawing away from the land and pointing out across the round curve of the Pacific, behind us the last of the Gulf islands with the sun shining on its high bush hills and steep cliffs, beyond that again the blue line of the land, well down in the sea. I knew that last island and had sailed round it on a still summer day, a wild fearful place with a toll of two shipwrecks, and the break of seas on it day after day. It had been very warm and peaceful then, and the sail had hardly moved with the wind, and now it all looked very wonderful and beautiful. There are few people that have seen this country that do not want to look on it again." In this previously unpublished work that is part memoir and part personal essay, critically-acclaimed novelist John Mulgan reflects on his departure from New Zealand. A powerful piece of writing and nostalgia, this account charts Mulgans efforts to discover who he is as a New Zealander and his new life in Oxford. Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. `I know now that later in life I will write prose and good prose,' declared the nineteen-year-old James K. Baxter. And he did. The 2015 publication of Baxter's Complete Prose reveals his remarkable range and depth across everything from personal, informal jottings to highly crafted literary essays and political polemics. Quarrels with Himself provides a dozen essays that uncover how much more complicated Baxter is than his popular stereotype, and how his prose writing (like his poetry) wrestles with contradictions, anxieties and competing impulses just as he wrestled with the society in which he lived, or from which he withdrew. Essays by Janet Wilson, Sharon Matthews, Paul Millar, Lawrence Jones, John Davidson, Nicholas Wright, Hugh Roberts, Kirstine Moffat, Paul Morris, Doreen D'Cruz, Peter Whiteford, and Greg O'Brien, with an introduction by Geoffrey Miles. Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. This copy feels unread. No faults. The enigmatic figure of John Mulgan remains a striking presence in New Zealand culture, his sole novel, Man Alone (1939), one of the classic landmarks of a mature and independent New Zealand literature. His second book, Report on Experience, published posthumously in 1947, is one of the most clear-sighted and moving memoirs to emerge from the Second World War. A Good Mail presents a generous selection of his letters home - letters to those he cared about, but from whom he felt a permanent separation. When he left New Zealand in 1933, he had declared "I think I'm going to have the best year of my life". That confident expectation carried him through the first half of the thirties, but the growing political unrest in Europe severely dampened his enthusiasm ("It's a hell of a world we live in"), made him more and more conscious of his separation from whatever 'home' had come to mean, and strengthened his desire to see again his parents, his wife, and the son he scarcely knew. It was a desire that remained unfulfilled, his life ended by his own hand. These letters tell his story.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Ursula Bethell (1874-1945) stands at the beginning of modern poetry in New Zealand. This rich collection of letters provides us with much evidence of her 'writerly' life and the origins of her poems. It also tells the moving personal story of an early life of travel and social work followed by happy years in Rise Cottage with her companion Effie Pollen; and of the devastating effect of the younger woman's sudden death, which left Bethell, as she wrote, 'a tree struck by lightning -- dead'. Ursula Bethell was a modernist poet who helped shape New Zealand's literary scene between the two world wars. This collection of letters tells the story of her early life of travel and social work in Europe and opens a window on her subsequent writerly life as she describes the origins of many of her poems. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
