Silliman, a noted mining consultant and cofounder of Yale's Sheffield Scientific School, reported abundant evidence of oil in California. The existence of a store of mineral wealth other than gold claimed urgent attention in 1865 when rich placer deposits began to diminish. But Josiah Whitney, head of the California Geological Survey, discounted Silliman's findings with outspoken contempt. Silliman was not vindicated until many years after his death, and the dispute eventually involved even the National Academy of Sciences.
