These changes are studied in their own right and also as a window into the intracellular processes that occur during the senescence of plant tissue more generally. The author discovered… that, during the first 12 days of curing, a substantial loss of organic solids occurred, with nearly a third of the hot-water insoluble organic solids of the leaves vanishing entirely. This loss was accompanied by a reduction in total nitrogen and an increase in amide and ammonia nitrogen, leading to the suggestion that proteins were broken down into soluble amino acids and amides. The data presented by the author suggests that curing tobacco provokes enzymatic digestion of leaf protein, resulting in the formation of ammonia and amides. The dynamic equilibrium between different forms of nitrogen in the leaves is further complicated by a probable loss of nitrogen via ammonia evaporation. This book provides valuable insights into the complex biochemical reactions involved in the curing of tobacco leaves, making it an important resource for those interested in plant physiology, biochemistry, agronomy, and the production of this globally significant plant.
