Rather strange book - at least to our contemporary senses. Reprints many cartoons from Punch, plus some poetry and articles, with some linking comments from the editor. Reveals what the British thought of the conflict, and the American leader, through satire. Some of the cartoons are cringe-making today! The book is printed on rather thick paper. It looks as if this copy has had an extra page inserted at the title page, the verso of which has been removed. There are a couple of spreads turned brown from something having been inserted (newspaper cutting, clip from Punch?), and the hinge is cracked in a couple of places leaving one leaf (page 83/84) holding on by a thread. Otherwise the book is quite clean and unmarked. A very good copy for its age. Scarce in this first edition.
