Volume pubblicato in occasione della mostra tenutasi presso l'International Center of Photography, New York 14 settembre 2006 - 7 gennaio 2007. Tavola virtuale rotonda fra: Diana Thater, Simon Nortfolk, Marine Hugonnier, Brian Wallis, Carol Squiers et al. Fotografie a colori e in bianco e nero di: Robert Adams, Doug Aitken, Wout Berger, Yannick Demmerle, Harri Kallio et al. Biografie . Cm 20x20. pp. 300. . Perfetto (Mint). . Prima edizione (First Edition). . Book.

Añadir al carritoSoft cover. Condición: Very Good. Wraps (PB) in very good condition with small fold bottom right corner, front cover. One thousand years ago, in the valley of Kashmir, a great Tantric master named Kshemaraja wrote his masterpiece: the Pratyabhijnahrdayam, which means The Essence of the Recognition Philosophy. This text was a concise primer, written to introduce spiritual seekers to the Recognition philosophy in less formally philosophical, more approachable language. What Kshemaraja created turned out to be one of the worlds great spiritual masterpieces, breathtaking in its brevity but stunning in its power. It came to be considered equivalent to scripture itself by later generations, because of its undeniable inspiration. 528 pages with end notes, bibliography and index.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Near Fine. 2nd Edition. Second edition, and a particularly handsome copy, of the abridgement of the Phil. Trans., covering the years 1665-1700; this was sanctioned by the Society and has the imprimatur in the first volume signed by Newton. These volumes contain some of the most important works of the scientific revolution, including Newton's work on optics, Boyle's on the nature of air, Halley's and Flamsteed's astronomical observations, and Wallis and Wren on mathematics leading up to the invention of calculus. "In his preface, [Lowthorp] envisaged two classes of reader: the generally curious who read for pleasure and instruction, and those scholars who wished to use it to 'write something of their own'. It was apparently for the sake of readers in the first category that he regrouped the material by subject ('under General Heads'), while adding marginal references to the original articles for the benefit of the second group . . . Lowthorp managed to compress the 21 volumes of the original into just three. He omitted book notices and papers that had already been made available elsewhere (in collected editions of an author's works, for example). In reorganising the remaining material by subject matter, he prioritised Newtonian preoccupations in mathematics, mechanics and optics. As editor, Lowthorp was perfectly willing to combine separate contributions when they referred to the same subject (with a marginal note to give attribution and reference correctly); or to split a single communication between two separate volumes, if it treated two very different subjects. Lowthorp's abridgement amounted to a significant transformation of the historic content of the Transactions, making it more accessible, physically and financially, to readers, as well as easier to navigate" (Fyfe et al., A History of Scientific Journals (2022), p. 135). "The importance of the abridgements of the Philosophical Transactions should not be underestimated. They were the means by which many people in the eighteenth century had access to some of the most important scientific literature available. Furthermore, they made the Royal Society's Transactions, the first and arguably the greatest scientific journal, more accessible to professionals by grouping the papers into broad subject areas, fully referenced and indexed, with those articles which were not abridged listed at the end of each chapter . . . Lowthorp's abridgement was appreciated by Flamsteed who wrote to Abraham Sharp on 16 June 1705: 'Mr Lowthorps a very good book I believe will answer that expectation for he has copied all that is good and gives lists of such papers he has left uncopied'" (Roger Gaskell, Cat. 32). Lowthorp was librarian to the Duke of Chandos, and with his patronage had recently been elected to the fellowship. His abridgement first appeared in 1705 and ran to five editions by 1749. Two separate publisher-editors extended Lowthorp's abridgement from 1700 to 1720, and a further extension took the coverage up to 1749, by which time 47 volumes of the Transactions had been compressed into 10 volumes of abridgement. A rival abridgement, edited by Benjamin Baddam, also appeared, this one preserving the sequence of the original papers instead of regrouping them by subject matter. Three vols., 4to, pp. [10], iv, [48], 620, 7 plates; [4], 915, [1], 14 plates; [24], 688, 13 plates. Uniform contemporary calf, sides decorated in blind with corner fleurons (front joints starting, a little rubbed, spine labels missing). An excellent copy with no restoration. Rare in commerce, RBH lists only one copy since 1949 ("Rather crudely rebacked and restored"); the later editions are more common.
