Effective Psychotherapy with Borderline Patients gives psychodynamic psychotherapists a view of how their colleagues actually treat severely disturbed borderline patients, and how entire treatments proceed over the course of several years. The authors present and analyze reports of five intensive treatments of borderline patients conducted by five different therapists. They address the questions of whether and to what extent borderline personality disorder can be cured by psychotherapeutic means, and they provide clinicians with useful yardsticks for assessing progress in long, complicated treatments. Divided into three sections, Effective Psychotherapy with Borderline Patients first outlines the major theories of borderline psychopathology and treatment and then discusses current controversies surrounding the technique of intensive psychodynamic therapy with borderline patients. The next section consists of case material. Each case report is followed by a case discussion in which issues particular to that individual therapy are briefly reviewed. These issues include patient and therapist characteristics, transference, countertransference, therapeutic techniques, and outcome. Finally, the third section presents an analysis of the cases with respect to diagnosis, patterns of intervention in treatment, patterns of change, and the relationship of therapeutic processes to the type of outcome achieved. Contents in 12 Chapters: Introduction to the Case Study Approach, Intensive Psychodynamic Therapy with Borderline Patients: An Overview, Martha Case Report Case Discussion, Ann Case Report Case Discussion, Stewart Case Report Case Discussion, Jennifer Case Report Case Discussion, Susan - Case Report - Case Discussion, Diagnostic and Prognostic Considerations, Patterns of Change, Patterns of Intervention, Quality of Outcome, and Overview and Implications. Plus Preface and References.
