Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book evaluates the feasibility of using aircraft to deliver fire retardants on wildland fires in the southeastern United States. The author, a Forest Service scientist, conducted a series of calibration tests in which various amounts of fire retardant were dropped from a tanker ai…rcraft onto different types of forest vegetation. The results of these tests showed that the amount of retardant that reached the ground varied depending on the type of vegetation, the height of the drop, and the wind speed. The author also conducted a series of test fires in which he used both borate and wet water to suppress fires. The results of these tests showed that both borate and wet water were effective in suppressing fires, but that borate was more effective in preventing the spread of fires. The author concludes that aircraft can be an effective tool for suppressing fires in the southeastern United States, but that the type of retardant used and the method of application must be carefully considered. Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex world of fire behavior in the unique pocosin ecosystems of eastern North Carolina. The author meticulously examines the fuel types characteristic of these organic soil regions, ranging from dense brush to towering reeds, and their roles in fueling extr…eme fire events known as "blowups." Drawing upon extensive field research and scientific analysis, the author develops a comprehensive fuel classification system based on species composition, height, and density. This system goes beyond mere description, delving into the energy dynamics of fire behavior and introducing the concept of "blowup potential" as a means of assessing fire risk. Through detailed descriptions and evocative photographs, the book unveils the intricate relationships between fuel types, fire intensity, and the potential for catastrophic wildfires. The author's insights into the energy basis of fuel classification offer a deeper understanding of fire behavior, providing valuable knowledge for fire management strategies and the preservation of these ecologically significant landscapes. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Wraps. Condición: Good. 84 pages [stated]. Red lettering on edge. Figures. Tables. Illustrations not as clear/good as in the original publication. Formerly CONFIDENTIAL RESTRICTED DATA, declassified to UNCLASSIFIED. Mailing label on back cover. The Table of Contents includes: Introduction, Experiment Design, Results, Discussion,… Conclusions and Recommendations, Appendix A and B, and nomenclature. Prediction of blast damage to trees represents an important phase in the tactical employment of atomic weapons in forested areas. Project 3.19 directly supported studies in obtaining experimental data on breakage and pressure attenuation experienced in a small stand of trees and additional data on breakage of isolated trees. The effects of a nuclear explosion on its immediate vicinity are typically much more destructive and multifaceted than those caused by conventional explosives. In most cases, the energy released from a nuclear weapon detonated within the lower atmosphere can be approximately divided into four basic categories: the blast itself: 4050% of total energy thermal radiation: 3050% of total energy ionizing radiation: 5% of total energy (more in a neutron bomb) residual radiation: 510% of total energy with the mass of the explosion. Depending on the design of the weapon and the location in which it is detonated, the energy distributed to any one of these categories may be significantly higher or lower. The physical blast effect is created by the coupling of immense amounts of energy, spanning the electromagnetic spectrum, with the surroundings. The environment of the explosion (e.g. submarine, ground burst, air burst, or exo-atmospheric) determines how much energy is distributed to the blast and how much to radiation. In general, surrounding a bomb with denser media, such as water, absorbs more energy and creates more powerful shockwaves while at the same time limiting the area of its effect. When a nuclear weapon is surrounded only by air, lethal blast and thermal effects proportionally scale much more rapidly than lethal radiation effects as explosive yield increases. This bubble is faster than the speed of sound. The physical damage mechanisms of a nuclear weapon (blast and thermal radiation) are identical to those of conventional explosives, but the energy produced by a nuclear explosion is usually millions of times more powerful per unit mass and temperatures may briefly reach the tens of millions of degrees.
