Our understanding of Greek prose, Hellenistic prose in the first place, has been deepened by it. He started by publishing two monographs in which the (necessary) combination of a stylistic and a syntactical approach proved itself useful. Dogs were used in sacrifices to chthonian deities. It would be trivial to say that this is the reason why the dogs are howling at Hecates approach. Fritzsche-Hiller rightly reject this explanation. Their own, however, weil es ihnen unheimlich ist im Mondenschein, is not satisfactory either. Whence the uncanny feeling ? It is the very association of dogs with chthonian powers which is marked in the present passage: kai serves to emphasize the close link between the relative and the main clauses.
