Lieutenant-Colonel William Malone is one of New Zealand's best-known First World War soldiers, having held off fierce Turkish counter-attacks for nearly two days before being killed by a shell from a British warship. The defence of Chunuk Bair has been described as one of New Zealand's finest hours. Malone and his men captured and held the heights of Chunuk Bair on the Gallipoli Peninsula in August 1915. William Malone was not only an outstanding military leader, as commander of the Wellington Infantry Battalion, but also a successful farmer, lawyer and family man. His letters reveal a man unfulfilled by peacetime pursuits, and war offered him a liberation of spirit and a new sense of purpose. Leaving for the front, he wrote, 'I leave a lucrative practice, a happy home, a brave wife and children without any hesitation. I feel I am just beginning to live.' This is the first biography of William Malone.

"The Brown Frontier" is a collection of 13 "stories and studies" covering the period from 1806 to 1877, a time when hostilities beween Maori and the early European arrivals on NZ shores. inter-tribal conflict, and later hostilities betten the Maori and European settlers and troops made Aotearoa a place of danger, and death. Territorially, his chapters are set in the North Island, from the Far North to the Taupo area. A number are located in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty, where Vennell worked as a journalist, while also pursuing his historical research. Given the anger and violence of the time under study, many of the stories have elements of violence, revenge and, abduction as well as of courage, loyalty and mercy. Vennell had great skill of wordsmanship, bringing immediacy and objectivity to each of these studies .First edition from Reed 1967 190 pages including sources, glossary, index 21 b/w illustrations, mainly from contempory art, one map plus e/paper maps, one intext drawing. Añadir al carritoPaperback. The Forgotten General highlights the courage, intelligence and determination of an exceptional New Zealander. Major-General Sir Andrew Russell was a distinguished soldier and a dedicated leader of men. He was among the top-ranked divisional commanders in the British armies that fought on the Western Front in World War I. He has been described as 'the one military commander of genius that New Zealand produced in the twentieth century. Yet little of his story is known. Born into pioneer farming stock, Russell's early days were spent on sheep stations in the Hawke's Bay region; he was educated at Harrow and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, and later served in the British Army in India and Burma. When World War I broke out, Russell commanded the New Zealand brigade that served with distinction at Gallipoli. He was subsequently knighted and given command of the 20,000-strong New Zealand Division that under his leadership became one of the finest fighting formations on the Western Front. The Forgotten General, however, is not just about a consummate military commander. It also tells the story of the men he led through four unbroken years of war-starting with the raw and inexperienced brigade that arrived on Gallipoli in May 1915 and finishing with the lite division at the spearhead of the British counter-offensive that finally ended the war on the Western Front. 2014.
