The front cover has tears at the bottom right and left and at the top left side and is slightly damaged at the bottom left of the back cover, which show a colour written line at the top. Remaining interior with minor signs of wear.; The author is a Swiss businessman with a deep interest in art, acquired during his youth which was spent in Rome. After studies and business training in Switzerland and Germany he went to India in 1909 and was transferred to Japan early in 1912, the last year of the Meiji era. For almost fifty years he has now been a resident of Kobe. His art interests automatically became focussed on all kinds of Japanese and in part Chinese productions, but after some years concentrated on Japanese art lacquers, which he thoroughly studied with the help of artists and other specialists, and of which he acquired a notable collection. Japanese art lacquers he considers unique in the world, and the finest examples of delicately artistic work ever created by man. It is a pity that they are not better understood abroad, cheap export ware having produced an entirely wrong impression of their intrinsic as well as artistic value. Apart from his authoritative lacquer studies Mr. Casal is well known as a folk- lorist, sundry dissertations having been published by Orientalistic Societies in their journals.
