Complete in 3 volumes. ix, 195pp., frontispiece and 10 black and white illustrations; vii, 209pp., frontispiece and 15 illustrations; vii, 214pp., frontispiece and 7 illustrations. Top edges gilt. After publishing the first two books of his Essays in 1580, Montaigne set out on a long journey, which took him to Italy through eastern France, Switzerland, Germany, and Austria. This extensive journey allowed him to expand on his bookish knowledge of Latin and Italian languages and cultures. Like many of his contemporaries, he was eager to see what was left of Rome, a city that had occupied so much of his classical education. The manuscript of his Travel Journal, written between June 1580 and November 1581, was not discovered until 1770, and three editions were published in 1774. This three-volume edition has been translated and edited, with an introduction and notes, by W.G. Waters. The books are uniformly bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the spines and gold designs on the front boards. The cases of the books are in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling on the boards. The spine have faded to a light brownish-green colour and the spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with some browning and foxing to the endpapers. There is some light foxing on the half-title page and frontispiece in volumes 2 and 3. A name and date (1904) has been written on the back of the front free endpaper in all three volumes.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. No Jacket. Limited Edition. DESCRIPTION: Two-volumes, brown moire boards. 11 1/4 x 8 inches. Each volume has b/w photogravure engravings with protective tissue guards. Gilt titles on spine and small gilt decoration on upper board. Although dating from the sixteenth century, this was the first English translation. On the limitation page of Volume I is stated "One thousand copies for England and America, No. 247." Vol 1, xxviii, 276 pp, Vol 2 ix, 323 pp. Each volume has nine plates, including frontispieces. Deckled edges. The cover page design is typical of the period, with a simple yet elegant layout, a decorative initial, and the use of red and black ink for printing, which was a common feature in more prestigious or limited edition books of the time. The decorative initial here includes a figure which seems to be from a tale or a representation of a character related to the stories within the book. The volumes were illustrated by E. R. Hughes, likely Edward Robert Hughes. He was part of the later phase of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, a group of English painters, poets, and critics, founded in 1848. His illustrations add a visual richness to the translated tales, possibly reflecting the romantic and sometimes mystical nature of the stories. CONDITION: Light scuffing to covers, more so to the back of Vol 2, corners bumped, tops and bottoms of spines frayed, shelf-wear to the bottom edges of cover boards and spines. Tissue guard to the frontispiece of Vol 1 is half loose, and shallow gutter crack there. Silk ribbons present but broken in both volumes. Ghosting of plates to tissue guards. Foxing to paste-downs and free endpapers. Toning to pages, mainly in the extremities. Texts are clear and unmarked. Strong hinges and joints. Happy to send more pictures and answer any qustions. ABOUT THIS TITLE AND BOOK:"The Nights of Straparola," also known as "Le piacevoli notti" (The Pleasant Nights), is a two-volume collection of tales by the Italian author Giovanni Francesco Straparola, which emerged during the Italian Renaissance. The collection is often noted for its importance in the history of European fairy tales as it includes some of the earliest known and recorded versions of stories that would later become famous in the collections of authors like Charles Perrault and the Brothers Grimm. Straparola's collection, first published in Venice in the 1550s, was one of the first of its kind to include tales of magic and enchantment, not just moral or practical lessons. The book frames these stories within a larger narrative that unfolds over 13 nights of a 15-day party hosted by Lucretia, a noblewoman in the city of Murano, near Venice. Each night, the guests tell each other stories, which are then relayed to the reader. This frame narrative was a common device in literature of the time, most famously used in Boccaccio's "Decameron." The tales vary widely in theme and style, encompassing both the fantastical and the everyday and often feature elements of surprise and the supernatural. Some of the stories in "The Nights of Straparola" have been identified as the first recorded versions of fairy tales that are still widely known today, such as "Puss in Boots" and "Costanza/Costanzo." The English translation by W. G. Waters in 1894 brought these stories to a broader audience outside Italy. Waters, in his translations, aimed to preserve the feeling and richness of the original Italian while making the tales accessible to English-speaking readers. The two-volume set from 1894 would be considered a significant contribution to the field of fairy tale and folk tale scholarship, providing access to these important stories in the English language and likely influencing later translations and collections. The inclusion of illustrations by a notable artist of the time would make this edition particularly valuable to collectors and those interested in the intersection of literature and art.
