Hard Cover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. First Edition. Second volume only (of three) collecting and explicating Chinese dramatic forms; here, the two plays are from the lyrical k'un-ch'ü or K'unshan school, which preceded and was nearly completely replaced by the 'Peking' school. In this form, st…andard melodic themes indicate moods & situations, and the plays are coordinated in movement, gesture, & song, with characters conforming to set archtypes. Longing for Worldly Pleasures is a complex monologue, requiring an actor of extreme skill, portraying the lament of a young but aging Buddhist nun on her life; Fifteen Strings of Cash "is a comic murder mystery satirizing bureaucratic ineptitude in the administration of justice." Includes extensive set & costume notes, stage directions, historic context. Hardcover in jacket, as pictured. Light wear to book, minor bump to base of spine; jacket is slightly off-center, with minor edgewear, light creasing. Text clean; xvi, 156 pages; index, illustrations (mostly of costumes), b/w plates, mostly of a 1956 Beijing performance of Fifteen Strings. Size: Octavo.
