Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book encapsulates the authorâs 60-year journey as a theater critic, encompassing his experiences from the 1850s to the early 1900s. It vividly captures the rapid decline of the theatrical arts over the course of his lifetime and the shift from literary drama and classical acting towards spectacle-driven, lowbrow entertainment. The author witnessed the fall of the old guard, such as Kean, Phelps, and Macready, and laments the loss of artistic integrity and technical skill in the theatrical landscape. He posits that commercial interests have gradually eroded the art form, making way for stars and their entourages rather than character actors dedicated to the craft. Despite his misgivings, the author finds solace in the emergence of new playwrights and the revival of stock companies as potential harbingers of a theatrical renaissance. The book concludes with a resounding call for a return to the foundational principles of theater, where substance and artistry are valued over superficiality and profit. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
