Añadir al carritoHardcover. black boards w/ red printing. 256 pgs w/ color, bw illustrations. blue, multi-color dustjacket w/ black printing. ".In this engrossing volume, essays by experts in the field and more than 130 color images showcase the experimental and international extent of Surrealist art during these years. Three of the book's featured artists, Dalí, Miró, and Pablo Picasso, were from Spain, where tensions between right and left after the formation of the republic in 1931 led, five years later, to full-blown civil war. The victory of General Francisco Franco's Nationalist forces over the Republicans in April 1939 was a blow to anti-Fascist hopes throughout the West. Picasso's 'Guernica', painted in response to the bombing of a Basque village in April 1937, was exhibited in Paris at the Exposition Internationale and made a strong case for the relevance of visual art in political discourse. With the onset of World War II in September 1939, brutal hostilities engulfed the whole continent and then the world. Unlike Picasso, who remained in Paris throughout the war, many artists became refugees, and some fled to safety in the Americas. Despite (or because of) the political and personal turmoil, this was a period of surprising brilliance and fertility: avant-garde artists on both sides of the Atlantic pushed themselves to engage artistically with the psychological forces propelling contemporary history. Tapping into classical mythology, folklore, and witchcraft iconography, artists found ways to communicate their feelings and fears in this 'time of distress,' implementing a wide spectrum of new techniques. In the 1930s and 1940s, monstrosities in the real world bred monsters on canvas, in sculpture, on film, and in the pages of journals and artists' books. 'Monsters & Myths' brings together the most vivid and potent of these creations, showing us war through the eyes of some of the twentieth century's most celebrated artists."--WorldCat. Añadir al carritoHardcover. Quarto. hardcover. Matte illustrated boards. 264 pages (some folded) : illustrations (chiefly color) ; 29 cm. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Paper, Color, Line: European Master Drawings from the Wadsworth Atheneum, on view at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, Connecticut, January 16-April 27, 2025./ Includes bibliographical references (pages 246-262) and index. "The Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art's rich collection of European drawings, watercolors and pastels is little-known and rarely seen. Since the mid-nineteenth century, the museum has acquired by purchase and gift a diverse group of nearly 1,250 European drawings of impressive quality. Paper, Color, Line: European Master Drawings from the Wadsworth Atheneum showcases some sixty highlights from the collection. Published on the occasion of an exhibition, this long-overdue catalogue is a unique survey of artists working in drawing media over a span of more than five hundred years. The museum's holdings are particularly strong in works from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Renowned drawings by Gustave Courbet, Edgar Degas and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec are included, as well as highlights by Egon Schiele, Paul Klee and Joan Miró. The collection is distinguished by its theatrical designs, particularly those linked with the Ballets Russes, with contributions by Pablo Picasso, Léon Bakst and Natalia Goncharova. Significant works from the Renaissance to the Rococo by artists such as Giorgio Vasari, Carlo Maratti and Jean-Baptiste Greuze emphasize the timeless appeal of drawing and will complement the overview. The catalogue of the exhibition will be the first catalog devoted to European drawings at the Wadsworth Atheneum. It will present fresh research on the objects as well as on the history of collecting European drawings at the museum"--. VG+. Light bumping along front edge of spine, otherwise clean and unmarked.

Remains a nice, sharp and bright copy. "A brand new look at the extraordinary accomplishments of early modern Italian women artists. This generously illustrated volume surveys a sweeping range of early modern Italian women artists, exploring their practice and paths to success within the male-dominated art world of the period. New attention to archival documents and detailed technical analyses of the beautiful paintings featured here--ranging from historical subjects to portraits and still lifes--offer new insight into the ways these women worked and their accomplishments. Essays and catalogue entries by an international team of distinguished art historians examine the works of Artemisia Gentileschi, Sofonisba Anguissola, Lavinia Fontana, Fede Galizia, Elisabetta Sirani, Giovanna Garzoni, Rosalba Carriera, and other less known Italian women artists. Through these works of art in diverse media-from paintings to prints-the fascinating stories of early modern Italian women artists are revealed."--Provided by publisher/WorldCat.
