Kopenhagen welcomes you to take a backward glance at the best exhibitions, artist profiles, public art projects, art publications and all kinds of new initiatives from the 07/08 season. New Danish Art 08 displays a cross section of the art scene and what has happened over the past year. -- The date is November 15th, it is evening and there is a partying mood at one of the city's more industrialized areas. In the White Meat District Laerke & Jeppe Hein opened their ambitious project Karriere - a café, bar and restaurant with a challenging and comprehensive permanent art program. At once the White Meat District became Copenhagen's answer to New York's fashionable Meat Packing District. Lifestyle magazines and local papers described the area, in which Bo Bjerggaard had already opened a gallery a few months earlier, as the nesting box for a new creative environment. Today, Copenhagen's answer to the Meat Packing District articulates itself a little less loudly. Karriere is an example of the general stagnation in the area's development from meat district to creative centre. Now the place is only open few days a week and only at night. Crisis is the word on everybody's lips this fall, and Karriere has, whether due to municipal slowness or financial trickiness, become a symbol of its consequences. -- The word is that the Valby-galleries have also felt the cold hand of financial meltdown. Mogadishni's Christian Chapelle has been forced to shut down his grand ambition of a gallery in Arhus. Loose rumors' the word on the street and half-truths have told many a tale of the Valby-pack's possible ups and downs, artists fleeing and being laid off. Crisis is the buzzword of our time. -- Perhaps that is why new winds are blowing at the Danish art academies, recent years have seen a new team of professors and principals leaving fresh fingerprints in the tradition-rich institutions. New enrolment procedures in Copenhagen demand technical skills, photographic documentation and eloquent argumentation skills. As a result students are presented with the harsh realities of life as an artist at the very beginning of their schooling. The result could be faintly seen at this year's school exhibition, Rundgang 2008, which drew, for this type of exhibition, an overwhelming amount of visitors. Above all the School of Media impressed many with its professional appearance. -- [.] Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
