Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book tells the story of Joseph, one of the twelve sons of Israel, who was sold into slavery in distant Egypt. However, through his God-given gift of dream interpretation, Joseph rises from obscurity to become the most powerful man in Egypt after Pharaoh himself. His elevation prec…edes a seven-year famine, during which his brothers come to Egypt seeking food. Joseph recognizes them, but they do not recognize him, and he sets in motion a series of events designed to bring them back together as a family. This book explores themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, and redemption. The author analyzes the depth of these ideas by examining the characters' struggles and choices throughout the narrative. In doing so, the book's insights on its main subject provide a moving example of love overcoming hardship and strife. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condición: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the evolution of Catholic devotional practices, especially the veneration of saints and relics, and their impact on religious life from the Middle Ages to the present. The author examines the historical roots of these practices and analyzes the theological and cultur…al factors that have shaped their development over time. Through detailed archival research and engaging case studies, the book sheds light on the complex interplay between popular piety and institutional authority within the Catholic Church. By highlighting the richness and diversity of Catholic devotional practices, this book offers a valuable contribution to our understanding of the historical and contemporary religious landscape. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. First Edition. 44 pp., Preface, +332 pp., text translated from Arabic by Pierre Vattier, period gilt decorated full calf binding, lightly rubbed round edges, title gilt on raised and decorated spine, marbled end papers, small unprofessional restoration of spine, ink marks on 2 leaves in Preface margin…s not affecting text, few worm holes not affecting text, previous owner's inscription on title pages, crayon marking on last leaf, damp stain affecting margins of pages 25-40 of Preface, dedicated to Cardinal Mazarin, first and only edition. The first started with the Creation and covered pre-Islamic times; the second dealt with the Islamic period down to his own times in 1260. For the pre-Islamic period, he used the Bible as a principal source for his history. For the Islamic period, he followed the example of the famous Islamic chronicler al-Tabari. Apparently he used the work of his predecessor Eutychius as well as that of his contemporary Ibn al-Rahib. His chronicle includes a succinct history of the patriarchs of Alexandria (summarised by A. Gutschmidt, 1890, pp. 395-525). It is here that the works of al-Makin and Ibn al-Rahib overlap, and it is difficult to distinguish who copied whom. This work was not hugely original as the author drew from earlier sources, including the world history of Ibn al-Rahib. However, the work was very influential both in the East and West. For example, it was used by the 14th-15th century Muslim historians Ibn Khaldun, al-Qalqashandi, and al-Maqrizi. The second half was published in Arabic and Latin in Leiden in 1625. The Latin version is a translation by Thomas Erpenius (van Erpen), under the title Historia Saracenica, while a French translation was made by Pierre Vattier as l'Histoire mahomtane (Paris, 1657). An abbreviated English translation was also made from the Latin by Purchas. The translation by Erpenius was one of the first ever made of an Arabic text in modern times, and suffers accordingly from the lack of Lexica and difficulties with the language. No edition of the whole work exists; there is no critical edition of any part of it, and translations into modern languages are only of trivial portions of the work. This lack is a considerable problem for philology, and renders the text effectively inaccessible to scholarship. Manuscripts of the complete text exist, as well as manuscripts of each half individually. The British Library has the oldest complete manuscript, BL. Or. 7564, from 1280 A.D. The Bodleian Library in Oxford has a manuscript which includes an unpublished Latin translation of the end of the first half of the work and all of the second. An Ethiopic translation of the whole work also exists, again unpublished, which follows the Arabic closely. It was made during the reign of Lebna Dengal (1508-40). A copy exists in the British Library, shelf mark "Ms. Oriental 814", comprising 119 folios of the 175-folio book. From this E.Wallis Budge translated the chapter on Alexander the Great, which contains verbatim extracts from the old Arabic Hermetic work al-Istamakhis. An addition to the Chronicle also exists, written by Al-Muffadal ibn abi Al-Fada`il, who was also a Copt and may have been the author's great-nephew. It continues the text until the death of al-Malik al-Nasir in 1341. The addition has only limited references to events in the Coptic community, and is mainly a secular history concerned with Muslim affairs. It only survives in a single manuscript, and was apparently written for personal use. Bibliographic references: I: GAL I, 348. Schnurrer, p. 115, no. 155. Gay 3568. Fück 73. Paper. Condición: Near fine. Handwritten Manuscript. In total, this collection includes 12 legal page leaves, written in pencil by Steinbeck on rectos only, and one typed letter from his editor. All in near fine condition, with faint toning to edges and small paperclip indentations. (Goldstone & Payne C90, article) With an 11-pa…ge typed transcription of the drafts and letters, bound in chronological order of appearance. Housed in a custom brown cloth clamshell case, title printed on paper label affixed to spine. (Provenance: Christie's 1986; Christie's 1999) John Steinbeck's article "Autobiography: Making of a New Yorker," begins in Part One (not included here) with his first unhappy (and short-lived) experience in New York City in 1925, at the age of 23. Part Two, handwritten here, details his second "assault on New York" in the fall of 1935, in which he begrudgingly transforms from a "Country Boy" into a true "New Yorker." At first, Steinbeck writes: "It is so strange to look back. I was going to live in New York but I was going to avoid it." Near the end of the installment, his anecdotes change. He writes: "Everything fell into place. I saw every face I passed. It was beautiful - but most important - I was part of it, I was no longer a stranger." In the final section, handwritten here, Steinbeck describes the broad dichotomy of the city, and romanticizes city life. He writes: "New York is an ugly city, a dirty city. Its climate is a scandal, its politics are used to frighten children, its traffic is madness, its competition is murderous. But. once you have lived in New York and it has become your home - no place else is good enough. All of everything is concentrated here, population, theatre, art, painting, publishing, importing, business, murder, mugging, luxury, poverty. It is all of everything." The correspondence between Steinbeck and NYTM editor Seymour Peck primarily discusses deadlines for the article drafts. In the first letter, Steinbeck tells Peck of his plans for the three-part article. Peck responds on November 26, 1952, asking for all writing to be completed by December 24, 1952. The second letter is inserted at the end of Part Two, informing Peck that Part Three will be along shortly. The third letter, dated December 17, 1952, accompanies Part Three, in which Steinbeck says the article "isn't very good, but it is heart-felt." A truly exceptional collection of autobiographical writings from a classic American author. Despite his reputation as a Californian, John Steinbeck spent nearly half his life living in New York City. In 1925, he left Stanford University without a degree and moved to the city for roughly one year. He returned to New York with his then-girlfriend Gwen, living for a while in Sneden's Landing. They stayed in New York until the birth of his first son, Thom, and the publication of Cannery Row (1945). He later returned to the East Coast with his third wife, Elaine, and bought a home in Sag Harbor in 1955. Steinbeck remained in New York City until his death in 1968. Handwritten by John Steinbeck, parts two and three of his three-part article for The New York Times Magazine titled, "Autobiography: Making of a New Yorker." Together with three autograph letters signed by Steinbeck to NYTM editor Seymour Peck, and o (ilustrador). Signed.
