Noting that Indigenous American tribes had long recognized the importance of the region's water for medicinal and spiritual purposes, the author provides an in-depth overview of the legislative history surrounding this unique National Park Service (NPS) site. This includes the area's designation as a national recreation area, given its recreational amenities and abundant water resources. Protected at the behest of the Choctaw and Chickasaw tribes, the CNRA has seen a shift from historic mineral water tourism to water-based recreation, with boating and fishing now surpassing mineral water collection as the primary tourist activities. The author notes that CNRA remains an important site for natural and cultural resources and includes information about the area's springs, creeks, lakes, and other bodies of water, addressing both general and site-specific threats to water quality and quantity within the park. The author's water resource management plan assesses potential threats to resource conditions and evaluates management action alternatives. The plan also provides direction for inventory and monitoring, resource management, and research activities, and includes a set of project statements prepared following guidelines established by the NPS. Of particular note are the external and internal issues that influence CNRA water resources, including agricultural, residential, and industrial activities neighboring the park, as well as recreational impacts, exotic plant management, wastewater concerns, and the importance of maintaining groundwater quality and quantity. In recognizing that resource planning is a multi-step process, this book represents part of an iterative process involving significant cooperation among agencies, private organizations, and individuals, and has included internal and external review of this document. The plan is intended to serve as a blueprint to assist in multi-agency coordination that will facilitate sustained efforts to protect water resources at CNRA.
