Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm "High Fidelity Long Playing" (monaural) vinyl record album, Capitol gray label W-750, near-mint vinyl in an original inner sleeve in a very-good-plus color cardboard jacket showing traces of a sticker pull to top right. The MGM film was based on Philip Barry's hit Broadway play "Philadelphia Story." Der Bingle sings "Little One," "Now You Has Jazz" (with Louis Armstrong), and (in a duet with Princess Grace) "True Love." Sinatra sings "You're Sensational," "Mind If I Make Love to You,'" and joins Crosby on "Well Did You Evah?" Reduced from $14.

After taking voice lessons to get rid of her Southern accent, Shay (1921-1978) ironically scored her first big hit singing the hayseed novelty number "Uncle Fud" WITH A SOUTHERN ACCENT as an encore while performing with Morton Gould and his orchestra. She promptly signed with Columbia Records and recorded a series of hit records, her biggest being "Feudin' and Fightin'," 1947 (featured on this disc, along with the aforementioned "Uncle Fud," plus six others.) In that same year, this 10-inch vinyl LP, "Dorothy Shay (The Park Avenue Hillbillie) Sings", was rated number one among Billboard magazine's Best-Selling Popular Albums -- reportedly the first female artist to score a number one album on the Billboard chart. This is a "very good" 10-inch vinyl LP (not a book) with a single scratch to the track "Mountain Gal," in a very-good cardboard jacket with a small dampstain to the top left corner. The problem is that the disc is Columbia Long Playing Microgroove (mono) CL 6003 (1947), but the jacket would more properly belong to Columbia CL 6089, also a Dorothy Shay album, but titled "Coming 'Round the Mountain." Shay played a nightclub singer, also named Dorothy, in the 1951 Abbott and Costello film "Comin' Round The Mountain." In 1970 she switched to acting character roles and appeared as the Widow Krebs in an episode of the TV Western "The Virginian" titled "You Can Lead a Horse to Water." Later in the 1970s she had a recurring role as Thelma, first owner of the Dew Drop Inn, in the TV series "The Waltons," until her death of a heart attack in 1978. This disc (in moderately mismatched cardboard jacket, as found) now reduced from $14.

Jacket indicates these classic jazz sides were recorded at the Apex Club, Chicago, in 1928, though this 10-inch vinyl LP was released in 1950. Joe Poston contributes alto sax, Buddy Scott banjo, Johnny Wells drums. For four cuts Lawson Buford was added on tuba. The band offers "Sweet Lorraine," Earl Hines' "My Monday Date," Victor Young's "Sweet Sue -- Just You," five others. Reduced from $25.

Don't know how the marketing folks at Capitol could have gotten much more straightforward than this: No need to wade through the fine print of 70-ish songwriter Jimmy McHugh's back-of-the-jacket palaver about "muted violins . . . candlelight, moonglow, and dreams for two" to get the unmistakable message: Buy an album called "Warm and Willing"; chill down some martinis, warm up the turntable, and someone who looks a lot like the young lady giving you the come-hither look on this jacket will slip out of something comfortable (already half accomplished) and happily join you in some reproductive behavior. (Hey, you think they were going to try and sell this thing by putting a big picture of balding frogface band leader Norrie Paramor on the jacket? I suppose they could have gone with the featured vocalist, opera singer Patricia Clark, the Glasgow soprano who voice-doubled the arias for Heather Sears in Terence Fisher's 1962 film "The Phantom of the Opera" (Herbert Lom as The Phantom, Ian Wilson as The Dwarf.) But believe us, this cover girl ain't that Patricia Clark. (In fairness, McHugh's "I'm in the Mood for Love" is a pretty good song -- though Julie London's 1955 version might have been more to the current point. (Jerry Lewis also sang it to Stella Stevens in "The Nutty Professor," 1963, though the classic version is probably still that of Little Rascals Darla and Alfalfa, 1935.) States "Produced for the U.S.A by Dave Dexter, Jr." . . . when he wasn't busy slicing up and playing "Mix-n-match" with selected tracks from various Beatles albums. So -- having rejected Eric Burdon & The Animals, Eric Clapton & The Yardbirds, Graham Nash & The Hollies, AND the first four Beatles hit singles, this was the kind of English music Mr. Dexter and Capitol figured Americans would go for? Nice cover girl, though -- uncredited, as usual. Reduced from $32.

This 1957 entry is not exactly rock 'n roll (though jacket back cover does advertise Bill Haley's "Rock 'n Roll Stage Show" and the soundtrack to "Rock Pretty Baby," with Sal Mineo and John Saxon.) Rather, the slow-dancing vocal duo (Al Alberts and Dave Mahoney, backed by Rosario "Sod" Voccaro on trumpet and Lou Silvestri on drums) who had big hits earlier in the fifties with "Tell Me Why" (Gold & Alberts, not Lennon & McCartney) and "Heart and Soul," here offer "Have You Ever Been Lonely (Have You Ever Been Blue)", "Peg O' My Heart," "Heartaches," "There I've Said It Again" eight others of the same ilk. No, the reason this album makes our "Weird Vinyl" collection is the color jacket cover photo of (supposed) teen-agers (supposedly) doing "The Shuffle." Not that we have anything against small people, mind you. But for this cover shoot, did the folks at Decca actually recruit a group of dwarves?

Originally the Harlem Queens, the Bobbettes' first lyrics for "Mr. Lee" made fun of the teacher, who they didn't like, at PS 109 in Spanish Harlem. Atlantic executives insisted on more upbeat lyrics (Hey, it was 1957. These days, they worry about Buffy or Riff Randell blowing up the whole damn school) and their first release became their biggest hit, reaching No. 6 on the Billboard Pop singles chart and spending four weeks at No. 1 on the R&B chart. (Although we still think "The Harlem Queens" was a better name.) This disc now reduced from $21.
