He travelled to the small towns of Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, and North Carolina where the Norfolk & Western Railroad operated. In order to capture the full impact and energy of the great trains, he worked mainly at night, setting up complex banks of flashbulbs wired in series to freeze his subjects in dramatic stillness. Here we see not only portraits of the engines themselves but of stationmasters, rural switchmen, , train cleaners and conductors, small stations and huge roundhouses, Equally important is the book's portrayal of trackside rural American life in the 1950s.
