Nacido en Palma de padres Chueta, Taronjí y Cortés descendía de una antigua familia judía, varios miembros de la cual habían sido martirizados por la Inquisición a finales del siglo XVII. Aunque se ordenó en 1872, se le negó un puesto en la catedral de Palma de Mallorca debido a su ascendencia judía. De 1876 a 1877 Taronjí y Cortés lanzó una serie de ataques a los prejuicios raciales de la jerarquía eclesiástica de la isla, en artículos publicados en el Almanaque Balear y en su libro Una mala causa a todo trance defendida (1877). Estos fueron reimpresos en 1967 con notas introductorias que sugieren que el prejuicio contra Chueta todavía estaba vivo a mediados del siglo XX. Su Algo sobre el estado religioso y social de la isla de Mallorca (1877) causó furor en todo el país y resultó en cierta liberalización de las políticas oficiales en Mallorca. Taronjí y Cortés también ganó renombre como poeta catalán.
