Darin und in der südafrikanischen Rassengesetzgebung liegt eine Wurzel des Separatismus der kirchlichen Eingeborenen-Bewegung, die andere ist auf das Verlangen des Zulu- Volkes zurückzuführen, eine Synthese zwi- schen der eigenen Stammes-Religion und dem Christentum zu finden. Die Geschichte dieser dynamischen Bewegung und ihrer prophe- tischen Führergestalten enthält eine Fülle dramatischer Höhepunkte und Wechselfälle, die Sundkler anschaulich und mit wissen- schaftlicher Gründlichkeit zur Darstellung bringt. Die Untersuchung - gleichzeitig eine hochinteressante Studie über den Zusammenstoß der rassischen Diskriminierung mit dem Leben der christlichen Kirche - zeigt, was der afri- kanische Christ am christlichen Glauben und in der christlichen Kirche für wichtig hielt, als der Einfluß der europäischen Missionen zu- rückging und er sich selbst überlassen war. Aus der einmaligen religionsphänomenolo- gischen Arbeit Sundiders ergeben sich für den Auf bau der Kirche Christi in Afrika viele Konsequenzen, die für die ganze ökumenische Arbeit von weittragender Bedeutung sind. Der Autor: Dr. Bengt Gustav Malcolm Sundkler (19o9) ist Schwede. Im Jahre 1936 wurde er zum Pfarrer ordiniert, im gleichen Jahr erwarb er den Lic. theol. und ein Jahr später den Dr. theol. Durch seine Tätigkeit als Missionar in Südafrika (1937-42) und seine Lehrtätigkeit (Kirchen- und Missionsgeschichte) in Uppsala (ab 1945), sowie als Forschungssekretär des Int. Missionsrates in London (1948/49) und als Mitglied der Studienkommisson des Welt- kirchenrats hatte er große Möglichkeiten, die Probleme und Hintergründe der Thematik der vorliegenden Arbeit zu erforschen. Im Jahre 1961 wurde Dr. Sundkler zum Bischof der lutherischen Kirche in Bukoba, Tanganjika, gewählt. Er veröffentlichte zahlreiche exegetische, dogmatische und missionswissenschaftliche Werke.
