Añadir al carritoHard Back. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Stouffer, Dan - Jacket Watercolor Ilustrador. First Edition Stated. 187 Pages. No defects noted to a book with a faultless interior text pages. Dust jacket has a light scuff to fron cover near the spine. The author's autograph looks like an Arabic inscription on an Islamic mosque. But in this book, Sinclair proves once again that he is one of the finest writers this region has produced. If you are looking for a New Mexico book to give as a Christmas gift this year, this one would be my first choice. This hardback published by the University of New Mexico Press, consists of 25 beautifully written essays on New Mexico that reflect Sinclair's great knowledge of _this region's history and culture. Sinclair has lived and worked in New Mexico for nearly 60 years, and incorporates many personal experiences in this very readable volume. Much of the material originally appeared on the pages of New Mexico Magazine, and Westways magazine of Los Angeles. In the opening chapter, Sinclair tells of New Mexico's varied landscapes, ,so diverse that visitors from all parts-sf the world find something that reminds them of their homeland. In succeeding chapters the author takes us to Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos,Mesilla, Bernalillo, Lincoln, to ghost towns and prehistoric Indian ruins. We attend Shalako at Zuni, the Corn Dance at Santo Domingo, Christmas Eve ceremonials at San Felipe, and Matachines dances. We visit with many colorful and legendary figures of the past, and wind up in the last chapter contemplating life in the Sandia Mountains. There are amusing anecdotes, intriguing legends, and two dozen pages of photographs. I am sure many of you became acquainted with Sinclair during the 17 years he served as superintendent of Coronado State Monument near Bernalillo. Before that, he was curator of the Lincoln State Monument. The son of a Scottish sea captain, and educated in England, Sinclair came to New Mexico in 1923 and worked on a cattle ranch near Roswell. Today (1981), he and his wife, Evelyn, live on the Santa Ana Reservation north of Bernalillo. I want to congratulate UNM Press for doing such a fine job on this book, for it is a beauty, including the striking watercolor dust jacket of the Sandias and Rio Grande by artist Dan Stauffer. Laid in are three newspaper clippings from the 1981 period regarding the book and the author. - From Howard Bryan column in a 1981 Albuquerque Journal. Twenty-four page center section of black and white photographs. Signed by Author(s).
