In der Jugend von myst.-enthusiast. Religiosität, stand er im Alter der Naturphilosophie und den Erweckungsbewegungen ablehnend gegenüber. Eine gewisse Nähe zur Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine, aber auch eine Aufgeschlossenheit gegenüber dem Reformkatholizismus um Johann Michael Sailer sind in seinen Abhandlungen gelegentlich fassbar. M. hinterliess zahlreiche biogr., wissenschaftl., theol. und philosoph. Schriften und Aufsätze.
