The spine is rubbed and darkened, leather corner tips are bumped, slight stain at top right corner of the front endpapers and at the top of fore-edge, very good, with all 16 plates in fine condition. The first Dutch edition of Captain John Stedman's "Narrative of a five years expedition against the revolted Negroes of Surinam from 1772-1777". In the 1770s, enslaved and formerly enslaved people of African descent led a rebellion in the Dutch colony of Surinam (now Suriname), South America. The Dutch army officer Stedman volunteered to lead in the fight to suppress the armed rebellion. The Narrative is based on the diary of his voyage and time in the colony. First published in London in 1796 with engravings by William Blake and Francesco Bartolozzi after drawings by Stedman, his Narrative became a significant work within the campaigns to abolish the slave trade and slavery. The Narrative includes graphic descriptions and illustrations of the Dutch colonists' brutal treatment of both enslaved and free Africans. An attractive copy of the scarce first volume, featuring many fine plates and folded maps engraved by R. Vinkeles, J. Wijsman, and A. Zurcher after the original English plates.

Stedman based the text on personal diaries he kept on his travels (now held by the University of Minnesota), albeit with his numerous accounts of sexual liaisons with free and enslaved women reduced and romaticised.
