Summary The sound image of Otherness has been a significant source of inspiration for Western music, especially since the late eighteenth century. Encounters with the racial and geographical Other fomented interest in unfamiliar musical traditions, which informed exotic projections by Western composers. This volume explores aspects of musical exoticism and its staging during the long nineteenth century, with a special focus on the Mediterranean. This diverse and yet historically interconnected region was arguably the heart of the exotic enterprise during this period. The intersection of exoticism, nationalism and empire is considered, with a special focus on the situation of Spain as both source of local colour and purveyor of musical exoticism. The essays in this volume explore elements of exoticism across a range of musical styles: from song to opera and the popular musical stage, and from instrumental to symphonic works. The analysis of this corpus also involves the examination of musical culture in dialogue with literature and figurative arts. While many of the essays focus on constructions of exoticism in individual works, several essays focus on repertories of musical exoticism and their coverage in musicological literature. Summary This volume deals, from multiple perspectives, with the complex world of European symphonism during the nineteenth century, a period in which it encompassed not only the creation of musical products and performances, but also significantly affected many compositional approaches, as well as aesthetic factors, such as the opposition between programme and absolute music. The emergence of the great symphony orchestras led to unprecedented types of professional interaction, and new forms of patronage. It also fostered the creation of a specific repertoire, and the construction of the first purpose-built concert halls. These developments originated in Europe at the beginning of the 19th century, in conjunction with the growth of music destined for increasing orchestral formations and the concert as a social phenomenon, available to the common public. About twenty authors discuss in this volume issues about analysis and musical creation, repertoire, musical aesthetics and criticism, orchestras and symphonic ensembles, musical performing venues, production system, consumption, entertainment system and the dissemination and reception of symphonic models in Europe. Through the work of Beethoven, Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Mahler, Strauss, among others, the volume addresses these and other aspects across the European geography and in different contexts: Spain, Italy, French, Portugal, United Kingdom, Northern Europe and Eastern Europe. Summary During the 19th century, music thrived in a variety of private and public spaces beyond the confines of theatres and concert halls throughout Europe. This volume decisively examines these unconventional venues, including outdoor locations such as gardens, municipal parks, squares, and fairs, alongside indoor environments such as spas and casinos. With over eighteen chapters, this collection provides a comprehensive overview of musical activities across diverse urban settings and social contexts during the long 19th century. The narratives take place in vibrant cafes, gardens, amusement parks, and seaside resorts, significantly highlighting the festive periods of Carnival. Furthermore, this volume underscores the critical role of music in exhibition spaces, equestrian arenas, the world of the circus, and military parades. By delving into these diverse spaces, we gain valuable insights into the musical landscape, where traditional concert hall and opera house audiences interacted with amateurs, dilettantes, and working-class individuals who often lacked formal education. This exploration encompasses 19th-century Europe, focusing on key Romantic cities such as Paris, Vienna, Amsterdam, Brussels, Lisbon, Madrid, and Barcelona, while also considering other alternative urban contexts like Astorga, Pula, and the Austrian Riviera in Abbazia. Additionally, the outlook is completed by an authoritative study of a circus itinerary in 19th-century England.
