This account tells in a moving manner of the friendship of T.E. Lawrence with the wife of the commander of the RAF station where he was in the late 1920s early 1930s. It shows a rather different aspect to the character of T.E. than the popular image. If you are interested in T.E. and have not read this volume be prepared for a pleasurable read, full of insight into T.E. A significant new introduction by Lawrence scholar Malcolm Brown and many previously unpublished photographs which add considerably to the value of this edition. The edition is limited to 500 copies and includes around 45 photographs printed from vintage prints in high quality, many, as indicated above, have not been published before. Those who know the Fleece Press titles will realise the quality that this volume achieves and how the illustrations greatly add to the story.

The Golden Reign was Lawrence's term for the time he spent under the command of Sydney Smith at the R.A.F. Flying-Boat Station Mount Batten in the early 1920s. The photographs are some of the most casual and candid images of Lawrence ever published. They include several of the author and Lawrence in the 'Biscuit', a speed-motor boat the two would use to make recreational excursions around Plymouth Harbor. This special limited edition includes a colour photograph of the model of the 'Biscuit' which Lawrence kept at his Clouds Hill residence. This, like many of the illustrations were not included in any previous issues. This is perhaps the most personal and informal of the many memoirs by associates of the enigmatic figure now and forever known as "Lawrence of Arabia"; and it is here presented in its finest and most complete format.

Clare Sydney Smith was the wife of Wing Commander Sydney Smith, Lawrence's Commanding Officer at the flying-boat station RAF Mount Batten, which was Lawrence's final posting from 1929 until his retirement in 1935. Clare and her husband came to know Lawrence well during that period, and their friendship is described in the present work, which takes its title from the inscription in a copy of Lawrence's translation of The Odyssey, which he gave to her. Although not marked as such, this copy was formerly in the library of the distinguished Lawrence scholar Jeremy Wilson, the editor of T.E. Lawrence's Minorities (London, 1971), the author of the National Portrait Gallery catalogue T.E. Lawrence: Lawrence of Arabia (London, 1988) and the authoritative biography Lawrence of Arabia: The Authorised Biography of T.E. Lawrence (London, 1989), and the co-founder, with his wife Nicole, of the Castle Hill Press, which has published scholarly editions of works by Lawrence and the definitive series of Lawrence's letters. A copy of the first edition of The Golden Reign was included in T.E. Lawrence: Lawrence of Arabia, where Wilson described it as 'one of the most important sources of information [about Lawrence] for this period. It contains fifty otherwise unpublished letters to Wing Commander Sydney Smith and his wife' (no. 361, iii). Wilson would later assist with the publication of the Fleece Press's edition of the work, which was issued in 2004 as The Golden Reign. The Story of my Friendship with "Lawrence of Arabia".
