Born Sarah Anne O'Brien, she joined the Sisters of Mercy in 1838, taking the name Sister Gonza. She soon emigrated to America to join mission work, beginning at Providence, Rhode Island. In 1858 she was sent to Manchester, New Hampshire, to assist in establishing parochial schools, orphanates, and hospitals. In 1865 she was sent to Bangor, Maine, where she performed the same duties, including becoming the first superior of the Portland convent. For nearly sixty years she remained active in New Hampshire and Maine.
