Der zweite Band widmet sich den technischen und organisatorischen Methoden der Korrosionskontrolle - von Beschichtungen und inhibitorischen Verfahren bis zu Werkstoffwahl, Anlagenplanung und Überwachungssystemen. Die Bedeutung der Befunde Shreirs sind das Ergebnis seiner Entscheidung, die bis dahin oft getrennten Disziplinen der rein chemischen Elektrochemie und des praxisnahen Ingenieurwesens (Metallurgie und Maschinenbau) in einem Darstellungszusammenhang abzuarbeiten. Während sich die früheren Untersuchungen zu Corrosion and Wear' auf den mechanischen Verschleiß, insbesondere die Abrasion (Gegeneinanderpressen, Kratzen und Scheuern von harten Partikeln auf Metalloberflächen) konzentrierten (Howard S.Avery, 1954, siehe Katalog), ging Shreir knapp zehn Jahre später in der ersten Auflage (1963) seiner Untersuchungen von der Beobachtung Thermodynamik und Kinetik aus. Er nutzte elektrochemische Spannungsreihen, Polarisationskurven und Phasendiagramme, um zu berechnen, warum und wie schnell ein Metall in einer bestimmten Flüssigkeit oder einem Gas korrodiert. So erklärt dann der erste Band, warum Maschinen bei 100% Auslastung im Mehrschichtbetrieb chemisch kollabieren. Zwei Faktoren: Der Faktor Strömungsgeschwindigkeit (Velocity). Shreir untersuchte den Einfluss von Bewegung auf Korrosionsraten. Wenn Pumpen und Leitungen so wie in den fünfziger Jahren über dem Limit betrieben wurden, kollabierten die schützenden Passivschichten der Metalle durch die hohe kinetische Energie der Medien - die gefürchtete Erosionskorrosion setzte ein. Der Faktor Tribokorrosion: unter Volllast führt die Überlagerung von mechanischer Reibung und korrosivem Milieu (z. B. saure Schmierstoffe Mitte der 50er Jahre) zu einem exponentiell beschleunigten Materialabtrag, da die mechanische Reibung die Entstehung stabiler Oxidschichten unmöglich macht. Der zweite Band untersucht dann die Konsequenzen dieser Befunde für die Wirtschaftlichkeit. In seinem Kapitel Economic Aspects of Corrosion diskutiert Shreir u. a. die volkswirtschaftlichen Folgekosten von Korrosionsschäden. In unserer zweiten Auflage waren dabei zwei Untersuchungen Grundlage seiner Berechnungen. Für die USA lag Shreir die ältere Studie seines Kollegen Herbert Henry Uhlig von 1949 vor: "The Cost of Corrosion in the United States". Uhlig bezifferte dort die jährlichen Korrosionsverluste der USA auf 5,5 Milliarden Dollar. Ähnlich wie später Haor für England stellt Uhlig auch für die US-amerikanische Wirtschaft fest, dass diese Verluste kein unabwendbares Naturgesetz sind. Sein Befund: ein signifikanter Prozentsatz der jährlichen Kosten könne sofort eingespart werden, wenn Industrie und Politik flächendeckend und konsequent auf bereits existierende wissenschaftliche Schutzmaßnahmen setzen - wie auf kathodischen Korrosionsschutz, korrosionsbeständige Legierungen oder chemische Inhibitoren. Mit ähnlichem Interesse untersuchte 22 Jahre später (1971) der Cambridger Chemiker und Metallurge Thomas Percy Haor in seinem Report of the Committee on Corrosion and Protection' für das Vereinigte Königreich. Er bilanzierte dort, daß die jährlichen Gesamtkosten durch Korrosion rund 1,3 Milliarden Pfund, das waren 3,5% des Bruttoinlandprodukts betrugen. Haor rechnete vor, daß etwa 25 % dieser Kosten durch die Anwendung bereits bekannter Kenntnisse und Schutztechniken vermeidbar waren und wiederholte damit im Grundsatz den Befund Uhligs für die USA. Die beiden Schadensrechner kamen auf unterschiedlichen Wegen zu ihren Ergebnissen. Uhligs Rechnung war top-down-orientiert: er wertete die regierungsamtlichen Gesamtzahlen zum jährlichen Stand der Volkswirtschaft aus, summierte Einzelpositionen (wie Lacke, Verzinkung, Legierung), die er als Substitutionsmittel identifizierte und verrechnete zusätzlich geschätzte Arbeitskosten. Haor rechnete buttom-up-orientiert': er entschied sich für einen mikroökonomischen Weg, bei dem er vor Ort erhobene Kostenangaben der Firmen zu Gesamtzahlen addierte. Damit kam er im Ergebnis zu ähnlichen Zahlen wie sein amerikanischer Vorrechner: er ermittelte 1971 den konkreten wirtschaftlichen Aufwand der Schadensfolgen direkt bei den Firmenbetreibern und summierte deren Angaben sektoral und konnte danach u. a. auch branchenspezifische Unterschiede differenzieren. Das wichtigste Resultat der Rückschau Shreirs auf die Befunde dieser beiden war nun (1976) die Feststellung, dass trotz unterschiedlicher Zeiten (1949 vs. 1971) und unterschiedlicher Länder (USA vs. UK) eine universelle Konstante existierte. Zwischen 20 % und 25 % aller Korrosionsschäden waren reine Verschwendung und ließen sich sofort vermeiden. Shreir nutzte dabei Hoars Befunde, um Uhligs frühe Thesen empirisch zu untermauern. Er selbst wiederholte deren gemeinsamen Befund, dass das Problem nicht an mangelnder Technologie liegt, sondern an einem Defizit beim Wissenstransfer von der Forschung in die Praxis. Und er legte sich in seiner Voraussage des Effektes fest. Im zweiten Kapitel "Economic Aspects of Corrosion" erklärt er die Einsparmöglichkeit von 20 % bis 25 % zum universellen, volkswirtschaftlichen Normalfall für moderne Industrienationen. Seine Erklärung: maximale Maschinenauslastung verschiebt das System von rein mechanischer Abnutzung hin zu aggressiver, mechanisch induzierter Elektrochemie.
