Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Very good. Limited Edition. This slim volume is quite the curiosity. We're calling it "The Time Capsule," as many others do, because that is the title that appears on the cover and the spine. But its official titlethe one that appears on the title page and in the Library of Congress catalog record and in many other item recordsis "The Book of Record of the Time Capsule of Cupaloy, Deemed Capable of Resisting the Effects of Time for Five Thousand Years, Preserving an Account of Universal Achievements, Embedded in the Grounds of the New York World's Fair, 1939." And that is exactly what it is. In 1938 Westinghouse created a new alloy, cupaloy, for a time capsule that was to be inserted into the ground at the site of the 1939 World's Fair in Flushing Meadows, New York, and not to be recovered for 5000 years. Cupaloy was designed to maintain its integrity and protect the contents of the capsule for that long. The book "The Time Capsule" is actually not about the buried contents, which included small everyday items like a fountain pen, samples of textiles and other materials, a newsreel, microfilmed essays by notable people of the time such as Albert Einstein, and other miscellaneous objects. Instead, the book was placed in depositories like libraries and museums (and, interestingly, monasteries) to help the people of AD 6393 with more fundamental problems regarding the time capsule. For one thing, they had to know how to find the thing, and the book tells them, using latitude and longitude and electromagnetic fields. It also helps them decide when it was permissible to dig it up, just in case our methods of measuring time have been lost in the intervening 5000 years. And it helps them figure out how to translate the texts inside into whatever languages might develop in that period if the English language is lost, using diagrams to help with pronunciation. (Which raises the question of how those people would read the book in the first place, butnever mind.) Our copy includes an original laid-in slip from Westinghouse stating, "This is an authentic copy of the book of record of The Time Capsule," and asks the owner to send their copy to a permanent repository such as a library if they no longer want it, as, "It is a message to the future, and should be carefully preserved." It was lovingly produced; a statement on the back page provides many more credits for the printers, designers, and even paper manufacturers than are usually found in books, again, "as a contribution to the people of a future age." And the 1939 time capsule itself? It is still buried in Flushing Meadows. There was apparently only one print run of the original 1938 edition, and our copy is part of it. Like the rest of those original copies, it is bound in dark blue buckram cloth. A textured bright gold rectangle runs across the front cover and the dark blue buckram shows through the letters of the title cut in that band; the title is also stamped in gold on the spine. The text block is in very good shape, tight and square, very clean throughout, and the ivory wove paper has deckled edges to the fore edge. The bottom and fore edges and corners show decided, but not serious, shelf wear. This item would be listed as "Near Fine" condition except for one thing: there is a 1.5" area of serious damage to the front cover, at the lower left, bordering and slightly overlapping the spine. Please see our photos. Typically, we would not sell a book with damage, but in our opinion, the historical value of a first edition of "The Time Capsule" makes it an exception. Photos forthcoming or immediately available on request.

Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The Oxford Handbook of the New Private Law reflects exciting developments in scholarship dedicated to reinvigorating the study of the broad field of private law. This field embraces the traditional common law subjects (property, contracts, and torts), as well as adjacent, more statutory areas, such as intellectual property and commercial law. It also includes important areas that have been neglected in the United States but are beginning to make acomeback. These include unjust enrichment, restitution, equity, and remedies more generally. "Private law" can also mean private law as a whole, which invites consideration of issues such as the public-privatedistinction, the similarities and differences between the various areas of private law, and the institutional framework supporting private law - including courts, arbitrators, and even custom. The New Private Law is an approach to these subjects that aims to bring a new outlook to the study of private law by moving beyond reductively instrumentalist policy evaluation and narrow, rule-by-rule, doctrine-by-doctrine analysis, so as to consider and capture how private law'svarious features fit and work together, as well as the normative underpinnings of these larger structures. This movement has begun resuscitating the notion of private law itself in the United States andhas brought an interdisciplinary perspective to the more traditional, doctrinal approach prevalent in Commonwealth countries. The Handbook embraces a broad range of perspectives to private law - including philosophical, economic, historical, and psychological, to name a few - yet it offers a unifying theme of seriousness about the structure and content of private law. It will be an essential resource for legal scholars interested in the future of this important field. Añadir al carritoBuch. Condición: Neu. Neuware - The Oxford Handbook of the New Private Law promises to help redefine and reinvigorate the subject of private law, a domain that includes property, contract, and tort law, as well as intellectual property, unjust enrichment, and equity. It emphasizes cross-cutting perspectives and relations between areas of private law, with special attention to the doctrines and structures of the law-an approach now known as 'the New Private Law.' This perspective includes explanation, justification, and criticism of existing law, reflecting the conviction of the editors that it makes sense to know what the law is in order to be in a position to criticize and reform it. The Handbook will be an essential resource for legal scholars interested in the future of this important field.
