The end papers are foxed and marked and the front paste down has a strange dedication in pencil. The front free end paper is missing. The text block is illustrated with humorous black and white illustrations, by J. A. Shepherd, with a frontispiece and tissue guard and is in very good minus condition. The pages are tightly bound, level and unmarked. Without jacket.

We can see this as the author writes about a bird called the Missel Thrush - we do not often find him defeated, as by the magpies in in the story: he will drive a rook from his nest, and attack jackdaws - cunning bids. One brave missel-thrush was seen to attack a rat which climbed to her nest, driving at the robber with such fury and force as to strike him from the branch. - certainly ferocious for such a small creature!
