No Jacket. ### The New Romney C of E Junior School - 175 Years of History by Sylvia Sharp and Peter Lindsey 1996 ### THIS BOOK: Classified as NEAR FINE, This is the 1996 Edition. The First edition was published in 1988 ## ## Our environment is such a rich resource many educational experiences can be gained from it. We have used many aspects - the shops, building, the parish Church of St. Nicholas, local farms, and the railway. Why not our school"? The idea was quickly seized upon when it became evident that a large piece of our past, the old school building in Church Lane ? was likely to be redeveloped in the future. We saw a need to record its history and contribution to New Romney's past before it was too late. ## ## With the co-operation of Shepway District Council and especially Mr Simon Lees, Mrs Sylvia Sharp, a teacher at the school, began to plan the topic during the summer of 1987. She appealed for any information, photographs, artefacts and past pupils to contact her. The response was most encouraging; therefore, in September, the Third Year children embarked on their historical journey, Joined by Mrs Julie Lavington. The children became historical detectives trying to discover how the building developed and what activities and events had occurred within. They compared school life today to that of 40-50 years ago by consulting the log books, school magazines and reports and by listening to the recollections of past pupils. They interviewed teachers who had worked in the old school and discussed such topics as corporal punishment, playground games, the curriculum and the outside toilets! ## ## What did our children gain from such a project? They discovered a little more about their environment and New Romney's past, and what is more important, they were learning how to do so. They handled archival material and correlated information from various sources in different forms. Judgments needed to be made about bias, reliability and generalisation. They compared and contrasted their findings with their situation. They were historians. ## ## INTERNATIONAL BUYERS, Please, contact me for a SHIPPING QUOTE; the FREE shipping is only available in the UK. No Author signature.

University of California Press. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 9780520253186. 195 pages. hardcover. keywords: Art America Women. DESCRIPTION - At the turn of the twentieth century, the celebrated American artist William Merritt Chase named Cecilia Beaux not only the greatest living woman painter, but the best that has ever lived. While Beaux - unlike her contemporaries John Singer Sargent and Mary Cassatt - has not fared well in modernist-driven art history, her work has become the subject of renewed interest on the part of art historians, collectors, and general viewers on both sides of the Atlantic, and her forty-year career represents a compelling and under-examined chapter in the history of American art. Cecilia Beaux: American Figure Painter is the most comprehensive appraisal of Beaux's talent in more than three decades. This handsomely illustrated book presents a range of the artist's strongest work and offers a fresh understanding of her career by examining critical questions of gender, class, and the importance of place. It features substantive essays which examine Beaux's participation in the international portrait market of the 1890s, explore the artist's professional identity and changing fortunes through a close reading of key images, investigate Beaux's sensitivity to the framing and display of her work. An illustrated chronology of Beaux's life and work, compiled by Alison Bechtel Wexler, completes the study. inventory #44172.
