Añadir al carritoHardcover. Condición: Good. First Edition. Edinburgh: Printed for the perusal of the Author's Friends by Thomas Constable, 1837. First edition. Small 8vo. cxxxiv,[ii],120pp. Title-page is leaf [iii], but half-title seemingly not called for. §Miln, who died young having recently commenced business, was a student at the University of St. Andrews, and the University of Edinburgh. The lengthy introduction, which outweighs the amount of verse, is predominantly taken up by a 100 page Memoir "from the pen of a kind and devoted friend" and includes various of the author's letters. The Preface notes of Miln, "Though short, his life was exemplary. No duty, sacred or social, was ever neglected. his mild and affectionate disposition endeared him to a numerous circle of friends; but, being naturally retired and unobtrusive, it was his delight to spend many of his leisure evenings in the social converse and endearments of that paternal home, where his premature death has left so sad a blank. At the desire of some friends, his mourning parent has undertaken the melancholy though soothing task, of arranging for the press the detached papers that have been found since his death, and of presenting them in the shape of this small volume. The Poems are not intended for the criticism of the world, but for the private gratification and perusal of those who mourn the lamented death of the author.". Byron's lines on Henry Kirke White from English Bards and Scotch Reviewers are quoted on the title-page. Presumably printed in tiny numbers. The poems are divided into five sections: Odes; Poems, chiefly on Serious Subjects; Translations; Melodies for Music, &c.; Comic Poems and Humorous Pieces - the latter including a charming Sonnet to Miss Houston's Cat. §Copies at Columbia & University of North Carolina only: no UK holdings. Original(?) cloth-backed stiff paper boards with early MS. label to spine. Early ink note to title describes the author as "Son of David Miln, banker, Dundee", information that does not seem to be recorded elswehere. Upper hinge slightly tender (inner hinges sometime strengthened internally), occasional soiling or browning to text. A good copy. …
