10 x 13 cm glossy publicity photographic print, on 10.5 x 15.5 cm piece of card, with 'PHOTO: JOHN VICKERS / COPYRIGHT' in blank space beneath image. In good condition, lightly aged, with mounts at corners on blank reverse. Black and white head-and-shoulders portrait of McDermott in pub setting, looking sharply to his left in a double-breasted Royal Navy jacket, whiskey tumbler in hand. Scan on applicatioin.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. He had taken on the management of Drury Lane in 1849, and had hoped to profit from the Great Exhibition, but retired from it in 1851, having incurred substantial losses. 1p, 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged, on the first leaf of a bifolium, with the reverse of the second leaf bearing minor traces of mount, as well as the following annotation in a contemporary hand: 'Jas: Anderson Esqre / Lessee Drury Lane / Theatre / T Bateman Esqre. / a P. Whelan'. Anderson addresses to 'Peter Whelan Esqr.' and gives an untidy signature 'James Anderson'. He takes 'the very first opportunity' to think him for his 'very kind note of the 7th. inst', and assures him of his 'earnest wish to adopt your advice as early as my circumstances will permit'. He ends by begging Whelan's 'acceptance of my sincerest thanks'.

2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Folded twice. The letter begins: 'My dear Lloyds, | However I may grieve at any misunderstanding between you and James - I cannot interfere. I have given him the Knowledge some time ago - & I again remembered [sic] him of it yesterday - that I am unable any longer to pay for his Board & lodging - and that he must henceforth trust to his own exertions for a livelihood: & as he is no longer a Boy - but a Man of seven & twenty years of age, I imagine he will endeavor to do his best.' All he can do under the circumstances is offer advice, 'which is simply - if you cannot agree to live together till June, then let him seek a lodging elsewhere, & both parties will be satisfied'. He has asks James's sister Jane 'to see, & to reason with him on the subject', he hopes 'with a satisfactory result'.

In fair condition, aged and worn, with closed tear. Folded three times. Addressed: 'To/ | Chas. Perkins Esqr. | 2 North Place | Hampstead.' The letter begins: 'My dear Perkins, | I have not been able to reply to your last earlier - having been confined to my bed-room ever since the 31st. of July by a most severe attack of inflammation.' He has been obliged to postpone his 'Cork engagement on account of this unseen misfortune'. He informs him that 'Miss H. Faucit is in London with her friends', adding 'I did hope to have been with mine for a few days but for this illness'. He is sending 'a list of plays to select from', explaining that he has 'no particular arrangement to offer save that I should like the Patrician's Daughter acted as soon as possible'. The list is of twelve plays, half of them by Shakespeare: 'Romeo and Juliet | Macbeth | Othello | Cymbeline | Patrician's Daughter | Much Ado About Nothing | The Wonder | The Lady of Lyons | The Gamester | Venice Preserved | Hamlet | The Stranger'.
