Los Alamos National Laboratory is a United States Department of Energy national laboratory initially organized during World War II for the design of nuclear weapons as part of the Manhattan Project. At the time it was known as Project Y. Los Alamos was the heart of the project. The lab's existence was announced to the world in the post-WWII era, when it became known universally as Los Alamos. With the ending of the cold war, the lab turned increasingly to civilian missions. Today, Los Alamos is one of the largest science and technology institutions in the world. It conducts multidisciplinary research in fields such as national security, space exploration, nuclear fusion, renewable energy, medicine, nanotechnology, and supercomputing. The town of Los Alamos, New Mexico, directly north of the lab, grew extensively through this period. The Los Alamos Science and Technology Magazine delivers The most significant research initiatives and accomplishments of the Laboratory delivered to a diverse audience. The national laboratories are performing R&D in support of DOE's goals in catalyzing the transformation of the nation's energy system, securing our leadership in clean energy, maintaining a vibrant scientific and engineering effort, and enhancing nuclear security through defense, nonproliferation, and environmental efforts. In recognition of the importance of the long-term health of these institutions, the U.S. Congress has authorized and encouraged them to devote a relatively small portion of their research effort to creative and innovative work that serves to maintain their vitality in science and technology (S&T) disciplines relevant to DOE and national security missions.
