Softcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. First edition. The dustjacket has some light rubbing at edges. A gallery catalog. Photos throughout; 48 pages. Bob Natkin (American, 1919-1996) started taking picture in high school, developing and printing in a friend's basement. At age 21 he was drafted and abruptly went from being a student in pre-med to being an Air Force gunner photographer during World War II. Afterwards, Natkin became a professional photographer, primarily capturing people in their environments all over his beloved Chicago. He also made remarkable images on a trip to Mexico in 1948, photographing the mexican people in ways quite unanticipated by those who had commissioned the work. These disparate scenarios have in common Natkin's skillful technique and compassionate rendering. The Daiter exhibit focuses on images taken from 1948 to 1953. ?It was a period of intense early creativity for him,? says Berlanga. Some of the best pictures were taken while he was doing an assignment for the Mexican tourism bureau?men walking a row of pigs down the street, an organgrinder looking furtively over his shoulder, a family waiting impatiently at a bus station. ?The sincerity and the intensity of many of the images he took down in Mexico are not the standard issue of what a tourist board would use to get tourists to go south of the border,? says Berlanga. The photos taken in Chicago that make up the rest of the exhibit have the same unadorned naturalism, whether they?re of narcotics court or the 1952 Republican National Convention, of popular entertainers or residents of the city?s slums.

Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. There is no ISBN. The Exhibition Catalog is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by David W. Williams: Regular-sized volume format. Plain white softcovers, as issued. Photographs by Bob Natkin. Essay by Tim Samuelson. List of Plates appended at the end. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. In integral pictorial DJ with titles on the cover and spine and very large flaps, as issued. Published on the occasion of the exhibition of the same name held at the Stephen Daiter Gallery Chicago from November 5 through December 31, 2004. Presents "Bob Natkin, Photographer". Some of the finest and most representative images by the Chicago photographer, who deserves a much wider national and international audience. Despite the fact that it was interrupted by the need to make a decent living, Natkin had a long and productive career in photography. He photographed, among other things, the inner-city projects of Chicago, Mexico, the Republican National Convention in 1952, and various celebrities and popular culture figures. The breadth of his interests is testimony to his lifelong curiosity and his commitment to social justice, a great photographer with a sociologist's wisdom, an aesthete's eye, and a moralist's conscience. "He had unshakable faith in humanity and believed that people should be able to go anywhere without fear or hesitation" (Tim Samuelson). An absolute "must-have" title for Bob Natkin collectors. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. This is one of few copies of the Exhibition Catalog still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A scarce copy thus. 42 plates. One of the finest American photographers of the 20th century. A fine copy. no.
