Emilie Lowinsky, an English society hostess and food writer. Lowinsky was good friends of British writers friend of Rebecca West and Raymond Mortimer. Illustrated by her husband, Thomas Esmond Lowinsky, an English painter noted primarily for his portraiture, but he also painted fantasy scenes. In the original full cloth binding. Externally, smart with minor bumping to the extremities and light discolouration to the cloth. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot. Norman began working at Penguin in the early 1960s and, as the only woman, the care of the company's cookery books fell to her. It was her responsibility to expand the cookery titles Penguin produced, and thus began to publish works by Jane Grigson, Claudia Roden, and Alan Davidson. The rare dustwrapper is in fair condition with significant chipping to the spine (in particular) and to the edges of both the front and back panels. Ruth J. Emilie Lowinsky (nee Hirsch, 1893-1958), was an Jewish English society hostess and food writer. Her husband, the surrealist painter Thomas Esmond Lowinsky (1892-1947), provided illustrations for this, her first book. published, as the dedication states 'For Each Other and our Greedier Friends'. The book, now famous for its examples of pre War party food, is divided up into 'Menus'. I particularly liked the recipe for Marrons Glaces Ice cream (not that it turned out anything like Ruth's I think). A very scarce book.
