At age 19, feeling the strong call of patriotism, he joined the United States Army. At age 24, John earned his wings and became a pilot in the Army air Corps. He was sent to England to destroy Nazi weapons transportation in Germany. While flying back from a dangerous mission, he was attacked by three Nazi war plants. He valiantly defeated two attackers, but was shot down over the English Channel by the third.
