With this book, Nancy Zeng Berliner gives us the first thorough study of the Chinese folk arts to be published in a Western language. She reveals a long and rich folk art tradition integral to the lives and beliefs of the peasantry ~ and therefore essential to a true understanding of China's culture, as Harvard professor John Rosenfield points out in his Foreword. Chinese Folk Art presents not only the evolution, materials, and techniques behind each craft, but also the ancient symbols and folktales, the rituals and celebrations associated with them. Thus the essence of life in a Chinese village emerges in Berliner's exploration of these enchanting works. On her infant son's birthday, a mother dresses him from head to toe in embroideries filled with playful tigers, whose grimaces she believes will protect the child from evil. Red, the color of happiness, makes wedding papercuts glow from rice paper windows. Shadow puppets depict scenes of popular tales like "The White Serpent." Despite suppression during the Cultural Revolution and pressure toward commercial manufacture, these marvelous skills as well as their iconography have survived. The more than two hundred objects illustrated in this book are samples of the superb collection amassed by Berliner and her husband, Zeng Xiaojun. A native of Beijing and an experienced folk art researcher, Zeng traversed China by bicycle in 1981, seeking the crafts of his countrymen. The following year he met Nancy Berliner, a young American studying Chinese art and religion in Beijing. Astonished by the beauty of the pieces in his keeping, Berliner left her traditional studies to join Zeng in his efforts.
