Paperback. Condición: Good. An admirable doctor in charge of a small, isolated hospital in outback Australia swaps his wife's second stillborn baby for an identical twin born to an impoverished farmer's wife who already has seven other children. Both mothers are unaware of the deception. Only one person, apart from the doctor, knows what happened, but no one believes him as he is considered to be mentally deficient. The doctor leaves for Ireland immediately afterwards so that his crime, committed on impulse, will remain undetected. The stolen twin is destined for a future of privilege as the heir to her aristocratic mother's wealth and status, while her sister in Australia faces a life of hardship and loneliness. The differing fortunes of the twins, the doctor's guilty conscience, the burden of the man who knows, the jealousy of an older sister, the fate of the mothers and the ambitions of the older generation, all combine to create conflict that compels the action forward throughout the novel until it reaches a dramatic and explosive climax. Praise for Tyringham Park 'The Last September meets Downton Abbey. Part emotional, part historical, it is all consuming - we urge you not to read it in one go' - Woman's Way 'Dark and densely plotted, this is The Thorn Birds with a dash of Du Maurier's Rebecca - brilliant' - Irish Daily Mail 'Tyringham Park is an exciting read with character stories that leave you in suspense till the end' - Bord Gais Energy Book Club 'An Irish period saga with bite. Its vindictive edginess is reminiscent of the novels of Molly Keane' - Irish Examiner 'McLoughlin spins a good yarn and the central mystery of what happened to Victoria kept me reading till the end' - Sunday Independent 'An entertaining story with great drama' - Irish Country Living 'It's great, full of villains, full of intrigue' - Monica McInerney, - The John Murray Show, RTE Radio 1 'A fantastic yet melancholic story and well worth a read' - Emma Hannigan, Author 'McLoughlin marshals the gothic suspense of Daphne Du Maurier, and the good and bad behaviour of Molly Keane's country squires and heartless mothers' - Irish Independent 'An engrossing read; you'll burn the dinner while you're reading this' - LMFM 'Tyringham Park is a story set apart by its mix of flawed characters and its layered plot' - Evening Echo 'Tyringham Park is an addictive blend of the historical and romantic with chilling, gothic undertones and compelling, well drawn characters. I couldn't put it down until I'd devoured the past page' - Sarah Harte, Author.…

Paperback. Condición: Good. Samuel Baskett, growing up in a Dorset rectory, wants to save lives, not souls. Mary Cockram, looking after her animals on the family farm, longs to travel the world. Spanning nearly 60 years of the eighteenth century, Searching for Samuel Baskett is a sweeping family saga, chronicling the lives of the Baskett and Cockram families, their friends, and servants. It tells of their loves and losses, their joys, and tragedies. When Samuel sets up as surgeon, apothecary and 'man-midwife' in the Dorset town of Wareham, he goes against all the accepted practices of the time. He attends births, encourages mothers to breast-feed their babies and tries to convince his patients to give up their old traditional remedies for fits and fevers. The novel covers many issues still relevant today - vaccination, slavery, and the role of women in society. Samuel meets a local farmer, Benjamin Jesty, who used matter from cowpox to inoculate his family, years before Jenner. And Mary sets up a school for girls, providing lessons in mathematics and 'natural philosophy'. Samuel Baskett's signature inside an old 1766 dictionary inspired Rosemary Allen to investigate further. The family trees she built up from Dorset parish records form the skeletal structure of the novel; she just had to put flesh on the bones in the form of a fictional narrative.…

Hardback. Condición: Very Good. Rosie is wearing her red cape, sitting up in her thinking tree wondering what she'll be when she grows up. People are always asking her that question, but she doesn't have an answer. She's not old enough to be a pilot, or a paramedic, or a dog groomer. But she does believe that she can still do lots of terrific things right now. So when she goes for a walk with her dad and they pass a food bank, Rosie knows that she can do something pro-active while she's still a kid. She can tell this is a special place and when she is there she feels useful and special too. But when Rosie bumps into a friend who seems embarrassed to be there with his family, she must figure out a way to make him feel better. Rosie tilts her head this way and that to look at the situation from the perspective of someone needing to use the food bank and comes up with a plan to help her friend and the food bank at the same time. Cathcart, Yvonne (ilustrador).…

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. During the German Reich one or two percent of draftees refused to serve in the German military Wehrmacht or later deserted. It was not until the early 2000s that Germany and Austria could bring themselves to rehabilitate these disobedient soldiers and to recognize them as victims of Nazism. For the first time, this present issue provides both an overview of the desertation proceedings and the prosecution practices by the military judiciary. Furthermore, it presents the structures which enabled the successful escapes in the military district XVIII by focusing on today's Austrian federal states of Tyrol and Vorarlberg as well as the Italian autonomous province of Bolzano - South Tyrol. Due to both their proximity to neutral and security promising Switzerland and the remoteness of the Alpine zones, these regions played an important role. Recent case studies also offer insights into this manifold and complex phenomenon.…
