Lateinische Messe nach dem traditionellen Ordinarium der katholischen Kirche, aber mit Rhythmen und Melodien kongolesischer Tradition aus dem Bantuvolk der Luba, ohne Einflüsse europäischer Musik. Die Besetzung besteht aus einem Vorsänger, einem Chor und afrikanischen Trommeln (Djembe, Congas und Ngoma). Die B-Seite der Platte enthält Folklore und Kinderlieder der Luba. Der belgische Franziskanerpater Haazen bildete 1954 einen Chor aus 45 Knaben und 15 Männern den er nach König Baudouin I. von Belgien benannte und kreierte 1957 diese Messe als eine Art kollektiver Improvisation. Bei einer Tournee durch Belgien, Holland und Deutschland wurden die Gruppe in Europa bekannt und erlangte größere Berühmtheit durch die Verwendung eines Teiles der Messe als Sountrack in Pier Pasolinis Film "Das erste Evangelium - Matthäus". Zweite (und erfolgreichste) der verschiedenen in Verbindung mit afrikanischer, südamerikanischer oder Flamenco-Musik entstandenen christlichen Messen der 1950er- und 1960er-Jahre, die erste war die 1956 in Obervolta (heute Burkina Faso) entstandene "Messe de Savanes" (siehe mein Angebot). (N° P08711L) Une des huit éditions, toutes réalisées par Philips dans les années soixante (2 aux Pays-Bas, 2 en Grande-Bretagne, 2 aux Etats-Unis, 1 en France et 1 en Allemagne), de ce disque, dont la face B n'a jamais été rééditée en CD. Enregistré en 1958 par "Les Troubadours du Roi Baudouin", un choeur de 45 enfants congolais de 9 à 14 ans et de 15 enseignants de l'Ecole Centrale de Kamina, dirigé par le Père franciscain belge Guido Haazen de l'Ordre des Frères Mineurs, auteur des arrangements, il comprend des chants religieux (Face A: Missa Luba, Ave Maria, Mbali kule (Gloria in Excelsis Deo) et O Jesu Christe) et des chants du folklore Luba ainsi que des chants d'enfants Baluba (Face B). Certaines parties de la Missa Luba ont servi de leitmotiv au film "If" de Lindsay Anderson (1968), d'autres ont été utilisées dans "L'Evangile selon Saint Matthieu" de Pasolini (1964). Le père Haazen, arrivé au Congo en 1953, a fondé les Troubadours l'année suivante; il est mort en 2004. Le Chur a effectué une tournée triomphale de six mois en Europe en 1958. Il est accompagné du gouverneur de la province orientale André Scholler. Cette visite est particulièrement importante car elle succède à de graves émeutes et précède l'autodétermination et la proclamation de la République Démocratique du Congo (ainsi que la sécession du Katanga sous l'impulsion de Moïse Tshombé).
